The Green Set to Release New Album – Hawaii ’13

Hawaii’s The Green are back with their anticipated new album, Hawai‘i ’13, set for worldwide release on August 20 through Easy Star Records.  Hawai‘i ’13 is the band’s third studio album and was recorded and mixed with Danny Kalb (Ben Harper, Beck, Jack Johnson) mainly in Costa Mesa, CA, at Hurley Studios.   ‘

Hawaii 13 The GreenSince the 2011 release of their chart-topping (#1 Billboard and iTunes Reggae) sophomore album Ways & Means (Easy Star Records), the sextet continues to raise their profile to the top of the thriving US reggae scene. The Green’s previous two albums have sold over 50,000 copies worldwide, winning awards (iTunes Best Reggae Album 2010, Best Reggae Album at Hawaii’s 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards) and receiving critical praise from media outlets like NPR, Billboard, The Huffington Post, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Their prolific touring has yielded countless sold out shows, while sharing the bill with reggae heavyweights Damian Marley, Rebelution, and SOJA, to name a few. Internationally they’ve toured in Japan, New Zealand, and Guam, while at home performing at notable festivals including the Vans Warped Tour, Wakarusa, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and the California Roots Festival.  “The talent and creativity coming out of the band is getting stronger by the minute and the new album captures this growth beautifully” says Easy Star Records Co-Founder Eric Smith.

The first single off the new album – “Take Me On” – is already receiving heavy commercial radio airplay in Hawaii and is currently charting #3 on Oahu’s Island 98.5 FM.  National Geographic Music touted “The Green’s radio friendly modern roots sound, sweetening their deep island grooves with just enough vocal honey to entrap legions of new fans.”

Hawai‘i ’13, recorded in February and March 2013, is the first Green album using a dedicated producer/engineer.  Kalb, best known for his work with Ben Harper, was introduced to the band by Easy Star Records.  Guitarist-vocalist Zion Thompson explains, “Danny was one of a few mixing engineers we had on our second album Ways & Means. We were really happy with his work on that project and his overall vibe seemed right so we asked him to be our main guy for this record and the results are pretty magical.”

The album title Hawai‘i ’13 has meaning on multiple levels.  The obvious ones are the year it was created and released in and that there happens to be 13 songs on it.  But, there is also a bigger significance according to Zion and the band.  He states, “It’s also a reference to a song that we grew up with called “Hawai‘i ’78” by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo‘ole.  The song deals with the issues and ongoing conversations about the changes that have happened to our land and people. It questions how our ancestors would react to seeing things like over-crowding, technological advancements and unwanted industrial growth. Something that many people and cultures around the world can relate to, but is an ongoing issue to the people of Hawai‘i to this day and is still very fresh in our minds.  On this record we wanted to encapsulate this push and pull feeling of both a connection to the past and a progression forward, all in one.”

The Green Debuts at #1 on The Billboard Reggae and iTunes Reggae Charts

Hawaii’s rising reggae band The Green has debuted at #1 on The Billboard Reggae and iTunes Reggae charts with the release of their new album Ways & Means (officially released October 25 on Easy Star Records).

The critically-acclaimed album has also debuted impressively on other Billboard charts including #6 on the Heatseekers Chart, #1 on the Regional Pacific New Artist Chart, and #94 on the Top 200 Digital albums, amongst others.

“With its #1 debut on the reggae charts, Ways & Means is picking up right where The Green left off with their first album. It is exciting to see how much they are accomplishing in such a short period of time, and we know there is much more to come,” says Easy Star Records co-founder Eric Smith.

The band shows no signs of slowing down and is midway through their extensive US tour with Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (Easy Star label mate Cas Haley joins the lineup on November 3rd). Critical praise for their album and live shows has been gushing with flattering superlatives from a diverse range of media outlets.

  • “The Honolulu band released its follow-up CD, “Ways & Means,” and it seems likely to win a whole new set of fans with its command of roots and dancehall grooves, catchy melodies and thick four-part harmonies.” – San Francisco Chronicle
  • “The Green (with loving oversight in the studio by the Easy Star team) pull off song after song on Ways & Means, coupling some beautiful harmonies with enough thump and grit to keep it real.” – Jambands.com
  • ”What they’ve emerged with is a great, highly listenable record that’s as contemporary as Rebelution or Easy Star All-Stars, yet which harkens back to the sweet harmonies of classic Jamaican artists like The Heptones.” – The Santa Barbara Independent
  • “You don’t have to be from Jamaica to make righteous reggae music, as these rising stars of the genre prove. They’re from Hawaii and they’re really shaking things up with their youth-infused rootsy reggae sound.” – Sacramento Bee
  • “The Green’s latest effort points to a band growing into their newfound success quite comfortably, as they’ve tweaked their sound to be sharper, more focused, and certainly a bit more ferocious.” – The Pier
  • “The Green are completely different to how you may expect reggae music to sound….The Green have revolutionized the reggae genre and made it exciting for the first time in a long time.” – Altsounds
  • “They set you up for an incredible melodic journey before making you beg yourself to put the album on repeat.” – The Dubside

The Green consists of singer Caleb Keolanui, singer-guitarist JP Kennedy, singer-keyboardist Ikaika Antone, and singer-guitarist Zion Thompson. The four members of The Green take pride in the pop burnished roots reggae style they’ve cooked up—edgy enough to make tastemakers sit up and take notice, yet accessible to all ages. Four distinct voices, four sharp songwriting talents, masterful musicianship, and monster grooves add up to one exceptional band with an unforgettable sound.

Don’t miss what Nice Up and World Music Central call “…one of the very best reggae acts.”

With songs contributed by all four core members, a strong shot of assistance from touring bassist/producer Brad Watanabe and touring drummer/producer Leslie Ludiazo, and the mixing skills of Danny Kalb (Ben Harper), Michael Goldwasser (Easy Star All-Stars), Jim Fox (Rebelution, SOJA, Israel Vibration), and Matthew Honda, the message of Ways & Means boils down to bringing people together and respecting all people for who they are, whether it’s through a love song like the title track, a spiritual like “Jah Love,” or a paean to perseverance like “Keep On” on which all four songwriters collaborated.

On Ways & Means the band also interjects doses of R&B, Soul, and Pop, making them an accessible listen to fans outside of reggae circles without diluting their roots. Though The Green is an important player in the new wave of homegrown reggae artists, they stand out with their ability to play both classic roots and modern dancehall, their vocal harmonies recalling reggae’s golden age, and their four distinct songwriting and singing voices.

The Green Signs with Easy Star Records

Media Release:

The Green burst on to the national scene last year with their self-titled debut album, which was named Best Reggae Album of 2010 by both iTunes and Hawaii’s Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.

Now, they are ready to pick up where they left off with their new release, Ways & Means. The full-length album comes out October 25th, while the Love & Affection EP, featuring four tracks from the upcoming record along with an exclusive bonus dub, is available digitally on August 9th. The band has teamed up with the trendsetting indie reggae label Easy Star Records, for both releases.

The Love & Affection EP is an excellent intro to the band’s maturing sound, featuring the three singles “Love & Affection,” “She Was The Best,” and “Got Me In Love,” along with the roots-heavy album track “Travlah.” The exclusive track is a dub version of “Travlah,” mixed by Michael Goldwasser of the Easy Star All-Stars.

The song “Love & Affection” is also available for download as the lead track on the Pacific Island Sampler, which the website thepier.com just released.

In advance of an extensive North American fall tour to support the new album, The Green head to California to play the Monterey Bay ReggaeFest on July 29th, then return to Honolulu for KCCN FM100’s Birthday Bash at the Waikiki Shell the next day, before heading back to the West Coast for more select dates in August.

The Green joins an Easy Star family that includes the Easy Star All-Stars, John Brown’s Body, Cas Haley, The Black Seeds, Ticklah, Tommy T and The Meditations.

“There are so many new bands coming into the reggae scene these days, but The Green immediately caught our attention as something special. They have already accomplished so much in a short period of time, but we know they have just scratched the surface of their potential,” says Easy Star Records co-founder Eric Smith.

“We remember listening to the first Easy Star release when we were just starting out,” says singer-keyboardist Ikaika Antone. “My first band Herbin Riddim even covered the song ‘Delilah’ off Easy Star Volume 1. Easy Star has been a major part of my musical influence and journey, so it’s very exciting to us to be putting out music on the label now.”

The “Unofficial” Na Hoku Hanohano Awards Ceremony After Party

I have now recovered from this event… LOL

This Go Go Dancer asked for a shot like this!

Well after the 34th Annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards show happened on Sunday evening the big question on a lot of folks mind was where was the after party going to be?

Well the “Unofficial” after party happened at The Shack in Waikiki where many of this years Na Hoku Hanohano winners and nominees as well as former award winners enjoyed themselves while FIJI rocked the crowd.

Fiji

R&B/Hip Hop Album of the year winner Kepa Kruse was there.

From Sudden Rush, KWXX Radio Personality Don Ke’ala Kawa’auhau Jr (AKA King Don 1) was also in the house.

Leslie Ludiazo from The Green actually played the Drums for Fiji that night.

Of course The Green lead singer Caleb Kaleonui was in the house as well!

Of course most of the clubs in Waikiki now seem to have Go Go dancers!

A great time was had by everyone in attendance!

The winners of the Reggae Album of the Year for the 34th Annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards was the group “The Green“.

"The Green" - 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano Award Winner Reggae Album of the Year

It just happens to be that “The Green” is my favorite group right now so I was thrilled to hear that they would be performing at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.

Performing at the Awards Ceremony

They rocked the Convention Center that night!

What many folks might not know, is The Green’s self-titled debut album was named iTunes Best Reggae Album of 2010!

The Green

Well I was fortunate enough to be allowed into the Convention Centers Main Ballroom at 3:30 for their sound check and that was a hoot!

The Green Sound Check

I asked lead singer Caleb Keolanui if I could come on stage and he said come on up!

On Stage with The Green

They played some chords while the sound folks at the convention center tweaked the audio so that it would be the best it could be for both the television audience as well as the live audience.

Sound Check with The Green

The Green then busted out a couple songs for just the few folks that were in the room at the time.

Sound Check

This was the second time that I’ve gotten to check out The Green in person.

Later in the evening after the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards were over… members of The Green were spotted at The Shack in Waikiki for an after party that I’ll be posting about soon enough.

I’d like to thank The Green for allowing me access to their sound check and for just being a great band in general.
