The Green Debuts at #1 on The Billboard Reggae and iTunes Reggae Charts

Hawaii’s rising reggae band The Green has debuted at #1 on The Billboard Reggae and iTunes Reggae charts with the release of their new album Ways & Means (officially released October 25 on Easy Star Records).

The critically-acclaimed album has also debuted impressively on other Billboard charts including #6 on the Heatseekers Chart, #1 on the Regional Pacific New Artist Chart, and #94 on the Top 200 Digital albums, amongst others.

“With its #1 debut on the reggae charts, Ways & Means is picking up right where The Green left off with their first album. It is exciting to see how much they are accomplishing in such a short period of time, and we know there is much more to come,” says Easy Star Records co-founder Eric Smith.

The band shows no signs of slowing down and is midway through their extensive US tour with Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (Easy Star label mate Cas Haley joins the lineup on November 3rd). Critical praise for their album and live shows has been gushing with flattering superlatives from a diverse range of media outlets.

  • “The Honolulu band released its follow-up CD, “Ways & Means,” and it seems likely to win a whole new set of fans with its command of roots and dancehall grooves, catchy melodies and thick four-part harmonies.” – San Francisco Chronicle
  • “The Green (with loving oversight in the studio by the Easy Star team) pull off song after song on Ways & Means, coupling some beautiful harmonies with enough thump and grit to keep it real.” – Jambands.com
  • ”What they’ve emerged with is a great, highly listenable record that’s as contemporary as Rebelution or Easy Star All-Stars, yet which harkens back to the sweet harmonies of classic Jamaican artists like The Heptones.” – The Santa Barbara Independent
  • “You don’t have to be from Jamaica to make righteous reggae music, as these rising stars of the genre prove. They’re from Hawaii and they’re really shaking things up with their youth-infused rootsy reggae sound.” – Sacramento Bee
  • “The Green’s latest effort points to a band growing into their newfound success quite comfortably, as they’ve tweaked their sound to be sharper, more focused, and certainly a bit more ferocious.” – The Pier
  • “The Green are completely different to how you may expect reggae music to sound….The Green have revolutionized the reggae genre and made it exciting for the first time in a long time.” – Altsounds
  • “They set you up for an incredible melodic journey before making you beg yourself to put the album on repeat.” – The Dubside

The Green consists of singer Caleb Keolanui, singer-guitarist JP Kennedy, singer-keyboardist Ikaika Antone, and singer-guitarist Zion Thompson. The four members of The Green take pride in the pop burnished roots reggae style they’ve cooked up—edgy enough to make tastemakers sit up and take notice, yet accessible to all ages. Four distinct voices, four sharp songwriting talents, masterful musicianship, and monster grooves add up to one exceptional band with an unforgettable sound.

Don’t miss what Nice Up and World Music Central call “…one of the very best reggae acts.”

With songs contributed by all four core members, a strong shot of assistance from touring bassist/producer Brad Watanabe and touring drummer/producer Leslie Ludiazo, and the mixing skills of Danny Kalb (Ben Harper), Michael Goldwasser (Easy Star All-Stars), Jim Fox (Rebelution, SOJA, Israel Vibration), and Matthew Honda, the message of Ways & Means boils down to bringing people together and respecting all people for who they are, whether it’s through a love song like the title track, a spiritual like “Jah Love,” or a paean to perseverance like “Keep On” on which all four songwriters collaborated.

On Ways & Means the band also interjects doses of R&B, Soul, and Pop, making them an accessible listen to fans outside of reggae circles without diluting their roots. Though The Green is an important player in the new wave of homegrown reggae artists, they stand out with their ability to play both classic roots and modern dancehall, their vocal harmonies recalling reggae’s golden age, and their four distinct songwriting and singing voices.
