Hilo Municipal Golf Course to be Shortened, Remain Open During Renovation Project

The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation announces it will shorten the Hilo Municipal Golf Course and open temporary greens so golfers may continue using portions of the links while it is undergoing major renovation.

Hilo Golf Course

Starting Monday, February 8, play will be limited to the front 9 holes and a temporary 9th green opened to accommodate construction work. When renovation of the back 9 holes is completed, they will be opened for play and the front 9 holes closed so renovation work may shift to that section of the course. Temporary greens will be opened at the 17th and 18th holes until new grass is established on the reconstructed greens. Also, temporary tee boxes will be opened at the 15th hole to allow for construction access.

These rotating partial closures are expected to continue through mid-May. During that period, tee times will be modified to allow golfers to play two rounds and create the equivalent of an 18-hole golfing experience.

Course renovation work will include the following upgrades:

  • Reconstructing the 9th, 17th and 18th greens
  • Constructing a new 14th green and using the existing green as a temporary green
  • Replacing all course waterlines
  • Installing new accessible drinking fountains throughout the course
  • Constructing new accessible shelters at the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 13th and 18th tees
  • Constructing new accessible restrooms at the 4th and 12th tees
  • Performing structural and safety repairs to the course bridges
  • Tree removal

The Department of Parks and Recreation understands the inconvenience the ongoing construction work will cause, and sincerely appreciates patrons’ patience and understanding.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Hilo Municipal Golf Course Improvements

Hawai‘i County Mayor Billy Kenoi, County Councilman Dennis “Fresh” Onishi, and the Department of Parks and Recreation invite the public to a blessing and groundbreaking ceremony for improvements to the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.  It will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, August 14, at the golf course located at 340 Haihai Street.

Golf Course

Join Mayor Kenoi, Councilman Onishi, and other dignitaries in commemorating the start of construction work at the 18-hole links. Light refreshments will be served.  Jacobsen Construction has been hired to rebuild four greens, the course clubhouse, cart-storage building, rain shelters, comfort stations and a maintenance building.

Also, the contractor will replace course waterlines, perform structural repairs and install accessible walkways at the driving range, build new bridges along the cart course, replace the Kawailani Street fence, and install new fencing fronting Haihai Street.

Construction work is expected to be finished in November 2016. The Department of the Parks and Recreation and the contractor will work to minimize impacts to Hilo Municipal Golf Course users. The course will remain open through most of the construction phase. However, a modified, 9-hole course will be offered between February and May 2016 to accommodate the construction.

Improving Hawai‘i County’s only public golf course is another example of Mayor Kenoi’s commitment to upgrade park sites island wide to meet the needs of a diverse and growing population.

County to Present Plans for Improving Hilo Municipal Golf

The Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation’s plans for improving the Hilo Municipal Golf Course will be the subject of a public presentation set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, in the Hawai‘i County Council Chambers located at 25 Aupuni Street in Hilo.

The purpose of this meeting is to explain the project’s entire scope to interested parties and gather their input.

Proposed improvements include replacing the clubhouse facility, waterlines and both of the course restrooms, reconstructing four greens, and performing various maintenance and repair work throughout the site. Another key component involves bringing the Hilo Municipal Golf Course and adjacent driving range into full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Design work has started, and the Department of Parks and Recreation expects to solicit construction bids early next year.

The golf course, restaurant and pro shop will continue operating throughout the anticipated construction period of 12 to 16 months. However, it’s anticipated that pedestrian, vehicle and golf cart traffic will be rerouted intermittently while construction work is occurring. Also, areas of play on the course will require temporary modifications to allow construction operations to occur safely and successfully.

The 18-hole Hilo Municipal Golf Course totals 165 acres, making it the largest developed recreational site in Hawai‘i County’s inventory. It’s located at 340 Haihai Street in Hilo and is open daily, except Christmas and New Year’s Day, from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The meeting place is accessible to individuals with disabilities. To request an Auxiliary Aid or other accommodation, please contact Jason Armstrong, Public Information Officer, at 961-8311 or jarmstrong@co.hawaii.hi.us by Wednesday, July 16. Individuals who are Limited English Proficient may also request an interpreter.
