Nothing Like a Cold Mehana on a Thirsty Thursday

What A Cool Combination... KapohoKine and Hawaii Nui Brew

I forgot to mention the other day when I went Ziplining with KapohoKine Adventures on the Umauma Falls Zipline Experience that not only did we drink awa to loosen up our minds.  The folks at KapohoKine were kind enough also give us complimentary Mehana Beer as well as champagne mixed with some sort of a juice.

The above gentlemen is the guy that personally cooked us our lunch that day.

Feline Friday – Georgina the Hawaii Nui Brew “Mascot”

Last weekend when I stopped by the Hawaii Nui Brew plant to pick up beer for the meet and greet, I noticed this really friendly cat that was giving me a lot of love.  I was able to shoot this picture of him.

Notice the kegs of beer in the back... what a happy cat!

I just found out the story behind this cat.

Unofficial mascot Georgina lives next door to the brewery in Hilo. Originally from Kauai, she’s named after Keoki beer…

Backstory: Keoki means “George” in Hawaiian. Hawaii Nui means “great Hawaii”. Appologies to all Georges, we like Hawaii Nui”

Big Island Meet and Greets Getting BIGGER

The 2nd Big Island meet and greet for internet fans and geeks was held this past Saturday at Big Island Pizza.

I started off by going to Wiki Wiki Mart Orchidland and picking up mangoes for the event that Carl Okayama, President of the company, had donated. Well he actually donated them to me, but I forwarded them on to the event.  (Wiki Wiki Mart: Orchidland

Here are the mangoes that I picked up:

I then made my way to Hawaii Nui Brew

Where I met John Walsh the brewery’s head brewer where he was cleaning the heat exchanger.

I then made way to the tasting room where tasting room worker Elsha was busy helping customers.

Once I picked up the beer to bring to the Meet and Greet, I made my way over to Big Island Pizza where they were gracious enough to allow us to use their fridge their to hold the beer.

For the first 15 – 20 minutes as people arrived, we just talked story and introduced ourselves.  Here’s a quick little video of us getting to know eachother.  Pizza’s were arriving left and right and at one point I had two stacked on top of  each other in front of ME!

group talk

After talking story a bit, Big Island Pizza Owner Jim King talked to the group about he created the business from scratch and is in it for the long run.

Then author Maya Frost talked about her experiences landing a book publishing deal with Random House books for her book titled “The New Global Student“.

Help Decide Which Hawaii Nui Brew We Should Drink on Saturday

This coming Saturday, August 8th at Big Island Pizza, we are having a second meet and greet to talk about the internet and just talk story in general.

Hawaii Nui Brew has been gracious enough to pitch in some beer for this little meet and greet… There is nothing better to wash down a slice of good local pizza then with a cold local beer.

Now I have to figure out which of these beers would be best with Pizza?

Anyone want to help out and choose what beer I pick up from the Brewing Plant before I meet these folks on Saturday?

Hapa Brown Ale

The Proof is in the Pizza

The other day I blogged about Pahoa Village Cafe having a happy hour between 3 – 6 pm where they gave away free pizza and allowed people to play free pool.

So I decided to check it out today and sure enough there was free pizza…

And just as advertised… Free Pool.

I’d say there was about 15-20 people in the place for the short period of time I was there.

The pizza was good, the pool tables are great and as Bar Manager, Jose can tell you… they have great Beer as well.

I was actually there to order food and take out and had forgotten all about the happy hour until I showed up there!
