Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame Announces the 2016 Inductees

The Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame announces the 2016 inductees. The ceremony will take place at the Outrigger Canoe Club on the 23rd August, the eve of what would be the 126th birthday of Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing.

“The Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame honors legends and celebrates those who help perpetuate the spirit and legacy of Duke Kahanamoku,” notes Bill Pratt, co‐chair of the Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame.

Bruce Blankenfeld is one of the most influential figures in canoe paddling and Polynesian Voyaging Society.  He is a distinguished pwo navigator and captain of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea and was the president of Hui Nalu Canoe Club for more than 20 years.

Diane Stowell is an All-America swimmer at UCLA. She went on to claim more than 100 national and international titles in swimming. Stowell was also a dedicated volunteer in her community, serving on numerous charitable boards and serving as a counselor in the Hawaii prison system.

Paul Strauch, Jr. was one of the most influential figures in the world of surfing back in the 1960s. Founder of the “Cheater Five” and the first to use bottom turns in large waves, Strauch won numerous surfing titles and was a member of the prestigious Duke Kahanamoku Surf Team.

Sharron Weber is a two-time world surfing champion and member of the Surfing Walk of Fame. Weber is also known today as a leader in her community. Weber was recently bestowed with the prestigious Kauai Living Treasures Award, given for her lifetime commitment and kokua to her community.

The Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame awards dinner will recognize the honorees, and it will raise money for Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation’s (ODKF) college scholarships and athletic grants program.

Since its inception in 1986, ODKF has gifted more than 2.5 million dollars to scholar athletes and non‐profit organizations in Hawaii. Past Hawaii Waterman Hall of Fame inductees include Duke Kahanamoku, Eddie Aikau, Fred Hemmings, Mark Cunningham, Randy Rarick, Duane DeSoto and much more.

Hawaii Waterman’s Hall of Fame Next Week

C4 Waterman co-founders, Brian Keaulana and Archie Kalepa join the list of world-renowned watermen and women when they are honored by the Duke Kahanamoku Hawaii Waterman’s Hall of Fame on Thursday, August 23rd at the Waikiki Outrigger Canoe Club.

The Waterman’s Hall of Fame acknowledges recipient’s legacies and all that they have represented to Hawai‘i’s ocean sports community. Other recipients this year include famed big-wave surfer and oceanographer Ricky Grigg and Michael Tongg, an instrumental leader in the growth of canoe paddling statewide.

“I am really proud of Brian and Archie and I could not think of any one more deserving of this honor,” said friend and business partner Todd Bradley. “They have spent a lifetime dedicated to the ocean and have made significant impact in not just their community but the surf, rescue and movie industry as well.”

The Hawai‘i Waterman Hall of Fame Awards Dinner is presented by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF) and Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Along with paying tribute to the new Hall of Fame honorees, the evening’s festivities will feature a concert by Henry Kapono and music by Maunalua.

“We are honoring truly remarkable watermen who have meant so much to modern-day ocean sports in Hawai‘i and whose influence is seen in generations of young people throughout our islands,” said Tim Guard, event co-chair and ODKF board member.

Table sponsorships seating eight are available for $3,500, $2,500, and $1,000, with individual seats at $65 each. Net proceeds raised will benefit ODKF’s college scholarships and athletic grants program. Tickets and information are available at www.DukeFoundation.org.

The Hawai‘i Waterman Hall of Fame was initiated in 2010 to create a lasting tribute to the Hawaiian Islands’ water sports legacy and honor the achievements of Hawai‘i’s standout watermen and waterwomen. The criteria used to select inductees are:

• Keiki o ka ‘äina / keiki o ke kai

• Sustained outstanding contribution to the sport

• International, national and local accomplishment and recognition

Past Hawai‘i Waterman Hall of Fame honorees include Duke Kahanamoku, Eddie Aikau, Wally Froiseth, Fred Hemmings, Buffalo Keaulana, Rabbit Kekai, Keo Nakama, Nappy Napoleon, Rell Sunn, Peter Cole, Ethel Kukea, Aileen Soule, and Nainoa Thompson.

Eddie Aikau Restaurant to Host Premier Book Signing

Back from a West Coast book tour, Waikoloa author and surf photographer Kirk Lee Aeder will be at the Eddie Aikau Restaurant, Saturday, June 30, from 3-5 p.m., during Eddie’s “Surf Hours” to sign and talk story about his new book Child of the Storm. This will be Aeder’s first book signing on the Big Island.

Child of the Storm, How an Angry Young Man Formed a Bond with the Sea and Changed Our Lives Forever, chronicles the tempestuous life of 1970’s California competitive surfer Chris O’Rourke, who died of cancer at the age of 22.  His lifelong friend, Aeder was able to capture O’Rourke’s meteoric surf career on camera as he rose to world class status; and as he fought illness with ferocity.

As book reviewer Matt Pruett writes in Surfline.com:  “After much guilt and reckoning, O’Rourke died young, but not before stoking Aeder’s photographic confidence, Caster’s design principles, Joey Buran’s faith in Christianity, Gerlach’s competitive instincts, Quiksilver’s corporate dynamic… By the time he passed, O’Rourke’s presence and spirit had influenced every facet of the budding surf industry and culture we all operate within today.”

In July I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of the Eddie Aikau Restaurant and Surf Museum, however the place was so packed with people, that despite them serving heavy pupu’s for their opening… I didn’t get a chance to eat that much!

Well a friend of mine who helps the restaurant with some of their social media stuff, including their facebook site, invited me back to the restaurant this weekend as she knew that I was going to be on that side of the island for the Taste of the Hawaiian Range so we met for lunch on Thursday where I was treated to an arrange of awesome things.

Chef Scott Lutey brought out this treat to begin our meal that consisted of strawberries, mac nuts, goat cheese, carmel and chocolate.  I was told the proper foodie term for the dessert was “Amuse Broche“.

In Hawaii… we say “Broke Da Mouth” when something is really good and this hamburger definitely “Broke Da Mouth!” My friend that I was with, had one of the fresh Catch of the Day Fish sandwiches that included a great smelling pesto sauce.

Eddie Would Hire… Eddie Aikau Restaurant & Surf Museum Holding a “Hiring Day”

The Eddie Aikau Restaurant & Surf Museum will hold a Hiring Day on Monday, June 6 at the Kings’ Shops, Waikoloa Beach Resort from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Now undergoing an extensive renovation, the restaurant’s Grand Opening is scheduled for July 3. Applications will be accepted for all positions: Servers, Cooks, Bartenders, Dishwashers, Bus Help, Host/Hostesses.

Eddie Aikau Restaurant & Surf Museum to Open at Kings Shops

Eddie Aikau, the inspiring Hawaiian hero and big wave surf legend who was lost at sea in 1978, dared to “go” for the biggest waves, the bravest ocean rescues, and the 2,500-mile trans-Pacific voyage of the sailing canoe Hōkūle‘a. Today two Hawai‘i Island-based companies have partnered to share Eddie’s story and spirit in a new, up-and-coming classic: the Eddie Aikau Restaurant & Surf Museum, opening this summer at Kings’ Shops in Waikoloa Beach Resort.

Brandon Lee, Ryan Lee and Keoni Regidor, the Honoka‘a Brothers, along with Executive Chef Scott Lutey, are Hawai‘i born and raised, surfers, watermen, enthusiastic young restaurateurs and chefs to watch. With Hawaiian Cahuilla, Inc., owned by Waimea residents Linda Gillette and husband Solomon Aikau, Eddie’s brother, they are working to assemble the ultimate collection of memorabilia, surf posters, awards, pictures, surfboards, videos and much more for the restaurant’s surf museum.

A July 3rd grand opening promises to be a big splash—with special appearances by celebrity pro surfers, top-of-the-charts Hawaiian bands, prizes, specials and surprises. With renovations under way now and exciting plans for the future, “Eddie’s” will debut during Resort-wide Independence Day festivities, including the annual Rubber Duckie Race for Cerebral Palsy, this year themed “Koloa Would Go,” the following day.

About the restaurant

With the grand opening slated for July 3rd, the Eddie Aikau Restaurant & Surf Museum will be open for lunch and dinner, with live music Thursday through Saturday nights. Located in the Kings’ Shops at Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, the two-story restaurant with indoor-outdoor lakeside seating, has been transformed into a hip yet classic 1960’s-style surf retreat/plantation house. Its ʻōhiʻa posts, earth tone interiors, “aloha” fabrics and a lifetime collection of surf memorabilia and mementos of Eddie’s life and surf career, capture the warm nature of an island home, inviting everyone to come in, share a meal and “talk story.”

About the chef

Winner of multiple Hale ‘Aina Awards, Chef Scott Lutey is creating a new “Contemporary Hawaiian Cuisine” for “Eddie’s” restaurant, based on his personal mana’o (thought energy) about food. “We focus on enhancing the natural flavor of the product, keeping up with food trends, cooking techniques and flavors in Hawaii and around the world—with simple elegance,” says Lutey. Spotlighting excellence in the sustainable local foods that Eddie would have loved, Chef Lutey is already reaching out to farmers, fishermen and ranchers for the best in Hawaii’s food products.

A waterman himself, Lutey is originally from Maui, and has made a name for himself on four islands, from First Hawaiian Bank’s Executive Dining Room in Honolulu, to the Sheraton Kauai and Beach House Restaurant, Grand Wailea Hotel and Spa on Maui, and Tommy Bahama’s restaurant in the Mauna Lani Resort here on Hawai‘i Island. Recipient of five Hale ‘Aina Awards and two ‘Ilima Awards, Chef Lutey has been a “Featured Chef” by James Beard and “Rising Star” by Zagat Survey Millennium Edition. He is a Grand Prize winner of the Angostura “World Class Taste,” and twice champion of the Sam Choy Poke contest.

Hawaiian Cahuilla, Inc., comprised of Linda Gillette and husband Solomon Aikau, Eddie’s brother, partnered with Honoka‘a Brothers, LLC to create “The E. A. Restaurants,” a collaboration of restaurant expertise and a personal relationship with Eddie. Honoka‘a Brothers LLC is comprised of Brandon Lee, Ryan Lee and Keoni Regidor, who already operate two of the Big Island’s favorite recent restaurants: Pakini Grill in Waimea and Napua on the ocean at Kalahuipua‘a within Mauna Lani Resort. About Eddie Aikau

Edward Ryon Makuahānai Aikau was born on Maui in 1946 and grew up on Oahu with his extended family, who tended an old Chinese graveyard in exchange for rent. He and his brothers dreamed of the day they could catch the monster waves of the North Shore, where few 1960’s surfers dared to go. Eddie Aikau not only mastered the challenge of Waimea Bay, he captured the attention and respect of the sport and helped spark a worldwide love affair with big wave surfing.

In the years to come, he would be hired as the North Shore’s first official life guard, and not a soul was lost to the sea during his seven years of service. No matter how dangerous the conditions, it became known that “Eddie would go.” By 1977, he had won the Duke Kahanamoku Classic, named for his personal hero, had his photo in Life magazine, and was ranked 12th in the surfing world.

Having satisfied his big wave goals, Eddie answered a personal calling to connect more deeply with his Hawaiian culture joining the Hawaiian voyaging canoe Hōkūle‘a. Hōkūle‘a set sail March 16, 1978, on what would be an ill-fated voyage from Hawai‘i to Tahiti. Capsized in rough seas, Eddie insisted upon paddling to Lāna‘i for help, some 19 miles away. Although the crew was later rescued, Eddie was never seen again.

His legacy is honored today through the world’s most famous big wave surf meet, The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, and The Eddie Aikau Foundation, established by the Aikau family in 2000, to support promising opportunities that reflect Eddie’s dreams through education, advocacy and philanthropy. www.EddieAikauFoundation.org.
