Marquee Brands Acquires Body Glove®

Marquee Brands LLC announced today that it has acquired the Body Glove® brand and related intellectual property assets from Body Glove International.

Established in Redondo Beach, California in 1953, by twin brothers Bob and Bill Meistrell, Body Glove has grown into one of the most revered and treasured outdoor sports brands across global markets and a wide array of lifestyle product categories. From its humble beginnings as a pioneer in wetsuit technology to a history steeped in surf and adventure, generation after generation continue to make Body Glove a staple both in and out of the water.

Body Glove to kick off their annual trip to the North Shore by hosting a celebratory dinner for WSL Rookie of the year, Tatiana Weston-Webb, prepared by World Famous Celebrity Chef Sam Choy.

The event will be filmed and aired on KHON Channel 2 in a episode of “Sam Choy’s IN THE KITCHEN” later this year. Sam will raid the Body Glove refrigerator for leftovers and use his culinary magic with whatever ingredients he can find and create a gourmet meal for all. Body Glove Athlete’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, Jamie O’Brien, Mo Freitas and Garret MacNamara and Sam’s co-host John Venri will be the Chef’s will be Sam’s official assistant’s and taste testers.

Retailers in attendance and will be joined by select athletes from the Body Glove Team including aforementioned Tatiana Weston-Webb, Jamie O’Brien, Mo Freitas and Garret MacNamaras well as Anthony Walsh, Alex Gray, and Nolan Rapoza.   In true All Things Water fashion, Wake Surf Champions, Keenan and Noah Flegal will also be on hand to attempt the challenging crossover from the wake to the waves of the North Shore.

This weekend, award winning author S.P. Grogan and artist Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker held two book signing events for their new book “Atomic Dreams at the Red Tiki Lounge“, for folks in the Kailua-Kona area of the Big Island.

The first book signing took place Friday at the Kona Oceanfront Gallery on Ali’i drive where folks gathered to listen to 13-year-old Aidan James jam on his ukulele while checking out the art gallery and getting their books signed.

Renowned Big Island Artist Announces First Ever Appearance in Florida

Renowned local artist Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker officially confirmed his first ever personal appearance in Orlando Florida September 5th. This event is planned in collaboration with surf giant Body Glove, who celebrated their 60th Anniversary on the Big Island last year.

“Billy Meistrell, whose Dad founded Body Glove back in 1953 and I will be signing DVD’s calendars, towels, mugs and limited edition collectable swag at Aku Aku Tiki Bar” said Parker.

Big Island Artist Unveils Sculpture Honoring Body Glove Founders

Big Island artist Chris Barela is unveiled his life-size statue here Thursday of the two brothers who greatly influenced the sports of surfing and diving. A bronze statue of Body Glove founders Bob and Bill Meistrell—who also invented the modern-day wetsuit—will grace the entrance to King Harbor Yacht Club at Redondo Beach’s scenic Seaside Lagoon.

See a mini-version of the statue on display at Barela Gallery at The Shops at Mauna Lani. For over a year, Barela sculpted the Body Glove marquette inside the Kohala Coast gallery for visiting guests to watch his techniques. After appearing at the 2014 Mavericks surf contest, the completed, 32-inch piece is back at the gallery and exhibited with photos detailing the sculpting process of the larger bronze.

To do the life-size statue, Barela built an additional studio at his Puako home where the armature, sculpt and mould were completed. The mould was packed and shipped in three different crates to Barela’s foundry in Ventura, California, where a team of skilled craftsmen used the lost wax process to complete the bronze memorial statue.

“It was like working in paradise, except for the heat and mosquitoes,” says Barela about his home studio. “It is an honor to have been chosen for this Body Glove project as the late Bob and Bill Meistrell were an inspiration to many.”

A former professional surfer who appeared on the cover of Surfing Magazine, Barela retired from the sport in the late 1980s and turned his love for the ocean into a career in sculpture, painting, photography and filmmaking.

“My passion is to bring awareness to the beauty of life within our oceans,” shares Barela, who is most recognized for his bronze sculpture of octopus. The Golden State native boasts public installations from the Oregon Coast to Key West, Florida, including those of Zane Grey, Hollywood Western writer; baseball great Ted Williams and the Tim Kelly statue standing sentinel at Hermosa Beach Pier. Barela was awarded first place at the 2011 Hawaii Ocean Film Festival for his short film on octopus.

Body Glove International, has been in business for 60 years now and celebrated its anniversary in Kona last night with a party open to the public at the Royal Kona Resort.

In 1953, twin brothers Bill and Bob Meistrell co-founded Body Glove when they designed the first practical wetsuit.  Sixty-years later, Body Glove is one of the very few family owned water sports brands in the world.

According to company president, Russ Lesser, “The company has thrived and been successful and I’m proud to have been part of that along with the rest of our team which is a great team, the fact that we have been here for 60 years speaks for itself, its great… it means we have done a few things right.”

Peter Townend (surfing’s first world champion) stated the following about Body Glove, “It’s incredible to think that the brand Body Glove is going to celebrate its 60th anniversary… and that its still all a family, I just think that it’s kind of special as there are few brands in the world that still have the family running it.”
