Rescued were Jason Barlow, 34-years-old, Todd Larsen, 42-years-old, Stephen Humphreys, 28-years-old.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Honolulu received a distress call at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, from the girlfriend of the the master of a 28-foot recreational vessel stating he and his friends were overdue from an ahi fishing trip.

At approximately 10 p.m., Saturday, Sector Honolulu launched an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and two MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point, a 45-foot Response Boat – Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Honolulu, the Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau and the Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island to search their last known location. The Honolulu Fire Department also assisted in the search by providing a fire boat crew and helicopter crew.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., Sunday, the Dolphin crew located two of the men sitting on top of the hull of their overturned vessel while the other man clung to the hull in the water. A Coast Guard aviation survival technician was lowered and all three men were safely hoisted into the helicopter and transported to back to the air station where emergency medical services were standing by to assist.

All three men were wearing their life jackets and only minor injuries were reported.

“We have had several recreational vessels capsize lately due to various causes,” said Jennifer Conklin, a search and rescue specialist at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu. “We conducted a search and rescue case just yesterday with a capsized vessel. They activated their emergency positioning indicating radio beacon and our rescue helicopter was able to fly directly to them without searching. Both crews survived but one group spent over 20 hours overnight in the water. Mariners that provide detailed float plans with friends and family, have registered EPIRB’s and are prepared for the worst can really take the search out of search and rescue.”

The Coast Guard recommends all mariners ensure they are prepared before heading out on the water. This includes having appropriate safety and communications equipment, checking local weather conditions and ensuring the vessel is seaworthy. I asked Merle how she heard about the contest and she stated “I heard about the contest on twitter. I was following @YahooMovies who ran the contest and @RelativityMedia who sponsored the grand prize…”

When asked when did she apply for the contest and what did she have to do win the prize and what her compensation was, she said, “I had to tweet the phrase “Even a pawn can change the game! I want to win a trip to the #Paranoia LA Premiere from @yahoomovies http://yhoo.it/ParanoiaLA #YGiveaways” to enter the contest….entered on July 24 and was notified on July 26 around 6:20 am that I had won the Grand Prize (airfare on Hawaiian Air and hotel accommodations at The Standard at 8300 West Sunset Blvd for two people!)  I had to give them an answer by 9:00 am or they would draw another winner. Of course i said that we would go. The contest description said that prize was valued at $3000. She took her husband John with her and “left Hilo on August 7 and returned on August 9. it was a whirlwind trip…” She stated, ” The premiere and after party was at 7:30 pm on August 8 at the Director’s Guild of America and we didn’t get back to the hotel until almost 1:00am.”

Gornick stated “I got to meet for the second time, one of my favorite thriller authors, Joseph Finder.

Merle and Joeseph Finder

Merle and Author Joseph Finder

“Meeting author Finder was a treat as  Joe is a NY Times best-selling author, @JoeFinder on twitter, which is where I initially heard about him. I also got to meet his daughter, Emma for the first time after only hearing about her from Joe.”

Merle with Director Rob

Merle with Director Rob Luketic

I asked her about some of the stars of the movie she may have met and she stated, “I also got to meet the Director of the movie, Robert Luketic aka, @Robluketic for the first time…  We approached and spoke to actors in the movie, Harrison Ford, Christine Marzano and Liam Hemsworth. We saw Miley Cyrus, Calista Flockhart (wife of Harrison Ford), Kevin Kilner, Richard Dryfuss, but didn’t choose to approach them. There were other show biz people there but we didn’t know who all of them were by name.   We think that we saw the actor who played Hercules, Kevin Sorbo, as someone mentioned the same thing.”

Merle and Liam Hemsworth

I asked her how she liked Paranoia the movie itself and she said, “Paranoia was awesome. While less detailed than the book, Liam Hemsworth was perfect as Adam Cassidy and Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman played Rivals very well and intensely. Watching the movie and knowing that the cast was watching it as well was unbelievable! Everyone clapped in the beginning as the credits appeared! That never happens in the theater! As a huge fan of Joseph Finder’s books, I couldn’t see it getting any better than this! ”

Miley Cyrus in the house

She thought of the bonus that, “We got the best seats in the house in theater one. Row A (first row) Center, seats six and seven which are pretty much right smack dab in the center of the screen!”

You can read more about her adventure on her website “Merle Reads

The movie itself doesn’t officially come out August 16th however, this trailer can give you a good idea about what the movie is about:
