Police have identified the victim as Roy Williams Jr. of a Mountain View address.

On Saturday (December 3), during routine patrol on Makaʻala Street, South Hilo patrol officers were flagged down by citizens just after 3 a.m. They discovered the unconscious victim lying on the roadway. Witnesses said the victim had been in an altercation with another man, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head on the pavement.

Williams was taken to Hilo Medical Center and later transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he succumbed to his injuries Sunday evening.

Carenio is being held at the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section continue the investigation.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident on Makaʻala Street call Detective Reed Mahuna at 961-2384 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 392-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.

  1. MMA is not a ticking time bomb! waylen is an idiot for whacking uncle roy in the first place! if you cant handle the alcohol, then dont go to the bars! waylen is a coward, and so are all his so called “boys”. he should go to jail! if you cant do the time than dont do the crime! yeah, sure he didnt plan on killing him, but he was very aware that he has more force than an average man. Waylen trained hard, he fights in the ring! charge him with murder, abuse/use of a deadly weapon! ALL MMA fighters are aware that they can not && should not fight outside of the ring! but all i know is that even if he does get away with this, uncle roy’s boys aint gonna let it go! soo the way i see it, he EFF’ed either way! good luck staying alive..

  2. This entire MMA mentality is a ticking time bomb. A little bit of knowledge on how to fight is a dangerous thing and since this guy was a trained MMA fighter he should be charged with the use of a deadly weapon and murder. Not manslaughter! So glad I am no longer in my 20’s and even happier that my sons are not living here at this time.

    • I don’t think he should be charged with murder because he is a trained MMA fighter, shit happens when you gO out to a bar! It don’t matter if ur on the east side or the west side, fights are bound to happen, the guy fell and hit his head! Its sad, the end results had to happen this way, but not like he planed this!!

  3. oh great. now we got a real detective working the case. same det. that investigated the homeles guy beaten with a 2.4 bloodied at the end, blood stains away from where the body was found. head to crushed for the pathologist to figure it out.

    what are dicks for?

as long as the guy clams up, chances are he’s scot free. great. just great.

  4. F%$#@ this place…I’m gone at the end of the school year. This brawler mentality is infused in the culture and society of the east side of this island. Every single frickin’ day I see this stuff happen in downtown Hilo.
