We posted a fun time-lapse video of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, construction a few months ago but of course, the project wasn’t fully complete at that time. Now you can pretty much see the whole resort taking shape right before your eyes. Read more at the Disney Parks Blog.

Hawaii County Staff to Explain and Clarify Proposed Building Code Changes

County staff from the Building Department will explain and clarify proposed changes to the Hawai`i County Building Code at two workshops next month.

Bill 270, Draft 3, would change the Building Code by adopting the 2006 International Building Code (2006 IBC), along with a number of state and county amendments.

The county is required by state law to adopt a building code using model codes and standards, such as the 2006 IBC, no later than two years after the adoption of the state building code.  The state building code was adopted in 2010, and adoption of Bill 270 will bring the county into compliance with the state law.

The workshops will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center, Community Meeting Hale  in Kailua-Kona from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and on Wednesday Sept. 7 at the Aupuni Center Conference Room in Hilo from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Reeds Bay Closed Until the New Year for Construction Activities

The County of Hawaii, Department of Parks & Recreation announces the closing of Reeds Bay Beach Park from Monday, Aug. 29, through Dec. 31, 2011 for construction activities.  The park improvements will include new accessible walkways with integrated seat walls; grassing and landscaping; and new park amenities such as outdoor showers, a drinking fountain and picnic tables.

Reeds Bay off Banyan Drive

The adjacent graveled parking area and shoreline will remain open to the public though construction activities may impact that area as well from time to time.  For boaters moored in Reed’s Bay that require access during this closure, the contractor is required to accommodate launching and retrieval of your watercraft subject to the location and progress of their work.  All other recreational boaters (kayakers, paddle boarders, beachgoers, etc.) are required to use a different venue for their recreational activities such as the nearby Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole Park or Hilo Bayfront Beach Park.

The department apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and thanks the public in advance for their cooperation as we strive to improve our community for the benefit of all.

State Increases in Vehicle Weight Tax, Registration Fee Taking Effect

Motorists will soon begin seeing an increase in their State motor vehicle registration charges as the result of a new State law.

This is NOT Hawaii's schedule

The new law passed by the State Legislature this year increases State weight tax rates from .75 cents per pound to 1.75 cents per pound for vehicles that are 4,000 pounds or less.

For example, the State weight tax for a small pickup truck weighing 3,090 pounds will increase from $23.18 today to $54.08 with the increase.

Larger vehicles that weigh 4,001 pounds to 7,000 pounds will see a tax increase from 1 cent to 2 cents a pound; and vehicles that weigh 7,001 to 10,000 pounds will see an increase from 1.25 cents to 2.25 cents per pound.

Vehicles 10,001 pounds and over will be charged a flat rate of $300.00 per year in weight taxes.

The new state law also increases the annual State registration fee from $25.00 per vehicle to $45.00 per vehicle.

County weight taxes are not affected by the change in the State law.

Motorists will begin to see the new State charges when the Vehicle Registration Renewal Notices with October 31st due dates are mailed out in September.

Under State law, beginning November 1, the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Division’s Motor Vehicle Registration Section will begin collecting the new State rates for ALL transactions, regardless of a vehicle’s registration expiration date.

Vice President Biden Visits the Troops in Hawaii

Vice President Joe Biden visited U.S. servicemen and women in Hawaii on his way back to Washington. He called them the “greatest generation of warriors that the world has ever produced.”

A few days earlier… Biden was caught facing off against this Mongolian Wrestler!
