County of Hawai`i Has Forwarded the Names of Five Fire Chief Applicants for Consideration in Selecting our County’s Next Fire Chief.

The County of Hawai`i Department of Human Resources has forwarded the names of five Fire Chief applicants to the Hawai`i County Fire Commission for consideration in selecting our County’s next Fire Chief. The qualified applicants are:

1. Aaron Arbles

2. Glen Honda

3. Gerald Kosaki

4. Paul Paiva

5. Darren Rosario

Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira officially retired on August 1, 2011, and has agreed to hold over as the Temporary Fire Chief on a volunteer basis until the next Chief is selected. The Fire Chief vacancy was advertised statewide for three consecutive weeks as required by Fire Commission rule. All applicants were screened by the Department of Human Resources personnel to ensure they met with minimum qualifications for the position. After reviewing all applications received, the above five names were forwarded by Human Resources to the Fire Commission.

The Fire Commission has scheduled the following public hearings and meetings to receive public input on all qualified applicants, and to interview them. The meeting dates are:

Members of the public and all interested persons may offer testimony in person at either of the above locations. The Commission will allow oral testimony in open and closed sessions as allowed pursuant to Chapter 92, Hawai`i Revised Statutes, as amended. Commission rule allows each member of the public five minutes for public testimony.

Additionally, all interested persons may submit written testimony to the Commission c/o Corporation Counsel, 333 Kilauea Ave., 2nd Floor, Hilo, HI 96720.
