Invisible Cows and Snow in Hawaii… I’m Not Losing it Folks!

So this weekend my wife and I took my son and his cousin across the island to the Hilton Waikoloa Resort, but on the way there, we decided to surprise the two boys with a side trip up Mauna Kea to go play in the snow on top of Mauna Kea!

We headed up saddle road around 10:00 in the morning and stopped off at the Mauna Kea Visitors Information Center to acclimate our bodies before climbing higher up in the altitude.

A view from a window inside the visitors information center

We stayed at the visitors center for about 20 minutes where the kids got a chance to view the actual “sun” through a filtered telescope that allows folks to look directly at the sun.

Looking at the sun

Before we headed up the hill… we were warned to watch out for the “Invisible Cows” that can sometimes cross the road.

Invisible Cows

So at this point… I switched my camera over to video… just in case I happened to see an invisible cow… I wanted to make sure I caught it on tape!

We pulled over here at the end of this video clip and I was able to catch the following pictures of the two boys having a great time in the snow.

Snow in Hawaii

Well it was cold up there… so as excited as they initially were… they got cold real quick.

Ok... it's colder then we thought it would be!

I can’t believe my wife actually got down on the ground to take a picture as it was freezing up there!

My wife's got the good camera!

We had our time on the mountain and this was the first time that my son can actually say he saw snow… and remembered it, as I’m sure he doesn’t remember the Colorado trip when he was only two years old.

We can't pack snow in the JEEP!

I just wish that instead of our Jeep… we would have had  a truck so that we could have loaded up some snow and brought it down to the resort with us.

While we only spent about an hour on the mountain all together… it was a great time bringing the kids up their and teaching them about different climates.

County Services Moved to West Hawaii Civic Center

Media Release:

Hawaii County government services in West Hawai’i will be centralized during the next two months as various departments and offices move into the newly completed West Hawai’i Civic Center.

However, the public will experience slight delays and interruptions in services as moves are made into the new building. The County of Hawai’i suggests those who have business with a department or office do so before or after the scheduled moving dates.

Here is the moving schedule of key county offices:

  • Driver’s Licensing and Motor Vehicle Registration offices will be closed on Jan. 25-26 and will reopen in Building C on Jan. 27
  • Research and Development will be closed on Jan. 25-26 and will reopen in Building C on Jan. 27
  • The Mayor’s Office will be closed on Jan. 25-26 and will reopen in Building C on Jan. 27
  • The Office of Aging will close on Jan. 25-26 and reopen in Building B on Jan. 27
  • Mass Transit and Human Resources, which previously did not have Kona offices, will be open in Building C on Jan. 27
  • Parks and Recreation and the Elderly Activities Division will open at Building B on Feb. 3. The permit window at the old Kona Airport will stay open 7:45 a.m. to noon, and then from 1-4:14 p.m. until April 1 when it moves to the Civic Center.
  • The Department of Liquor Control will be closed Feb. 1-2 and reopen Feb. 3 in Building B (Liquor Control is open only by appointment at 961-8218)
  • The Office of Housing and Community Development will be closed Feb. 1-2 and reopen in Building B on Feb. 3
  • The Office of Elections will be closed Feb. 1-2 and reopen in Building B on Feb. 3
  • County Council offices in West Hawai’i will be closed Feb. 7 and reopen in Building A on Feb. 10
  • The Fire Inspector’s office will close Feb. 14-15 and reopen in Building E on Feb. 16
  • The Building Division of Public Works will close Feb. 14-15 and reopen in Building E on Feb. 16
  • Planning will close Feb. 14-15 and reopen in Building E on Feb. 16
  • The Engineering Division of Public Works will close Feb. 22-23 and reopen in Building D on Feb. 24
  • Environmental Management will close Feb. 22-23 and reopen in Building E on Feb. 24

I Love Me a “Staycation” Every Once in A While

I love getting away from the East side of the Big Island and spending weekends over on the Kohala Coast.

As much as I love getting away from it all… I always love coming home to my own house again!

I have a lot to catch up on… but for now… will just recuperate from my little vacation.

Mahalo to the Hilton Waikoloa Resort for hooking my ohana up… and I’ll be posting a few posts when I have gotten caught up with things.

Here is my Twitter Feed from the weekend:
