Mayor Kenoi to Become Weekly TV Celebrity at the Publics Expense

I made up the headline on this post myself and I’m not sure how I feel about our mayor starring in a weekly television show due to the amount of time it may take him away from actual mayoral duties  and I also have to wonder about the funding of the program.

I have the feeling I know how it’s funded… I’m just not sure though as it does take time and money to produce a show similar to this.

I used to be the Production Assistant for Capitol TV and we used to air a program called “Call the Capitol” that was also run on a PEG (Public Education and Government) channel throughout the state.

This was a “live program” that was funded pretty much by the State Legislature where folks could call in and talk to the legislatures that were on that weeks show, when I worked for the Legislative Broadcast Team at the capital.

In a sense… he is using our public funding… to spread his government messages and in a sense… promoting himself for the next election.

From the Mayor’s Office:

This Week with Mayor Billy Kenoi,” a new 30-minute program on Na Leo O Hawai`i community television, will highlight the Mayor’s many public activities where he meets with residents to address island issues and concerns as he travels around Hawai`i Island.

The program will be broadcast twice each week beginning Thursday, Oct. 7, on Na Leo O Hawai’i community television channel 53.

This week’s show features the Mayor’s introduction to the new program, scenes from his recent visits and discussions with Kona residents, his closing speech from the Mayor’s Hawaii County Health Conference, and a video titled “Healing Our Island,” which documents the anti-ice initiative that successfully provided grants to non-profit organizations for community events and programs that helped combat the devastating effects of ice on our island.

A new 30-minute weekly program will be broadcast each Thursday at 6 p.m. beginning Oct. 7, and will be repeated each Sunday at 7 p.m., at both times on Na Leo O Hawai`i channel 53.

  1. […] I said it last week that I suspected that there was something funny with the Mayor’s new show… and it turns out my gut feeling was right to the tune of $5000.00 a month! […]

    • The mayor could live stream things via the internet and not edit things out the way he wants to.

It would be much cheaper and I’d much rather follow Mayor Kenoi around via “” or something like that.
