Lincoln Ashida on Golf at Conference: “Nothing to Do With Conference… “

It has nothing to do with the conference. That’s why it occurs after the conference adjourns. Golf participants pay their own costs. I’m not a golfer so I normally don’t take leave like some others, and I just come back to Hilo. I’m normally wiped out by then. But many who participate in this golf social event say it is an excellent networking activity.

Thanks for the quick response Mr. Ashida.

I actually do believe in networking as excellent use of our tax money, not sure if doing it on the golf course of one of the nicest golf courses in the state is the proper place to do it though.

I’m not sure why you are trying to justify this as a Networking Activity since they are paying for the rounds of golf themselves.

I knew I should have gone to law school. ;)

Big Island Police Searching for Missing 34-Year-Old Hilo Woman

The Hawai’i Police Department is renewing requests for help locating a 34-year old Hilo woman missing since September 23, 2008.

Marlo Moku

Marlo Moku

Marlo Moku was last seen at a convenience store in the lower Kaumana Drive area of Hilo. She is described as part Hawaiian, approximately 5-foot-7, about 180 pounds with brown eyes and shoulder-length dark brown curly hair. She was last seen wearing shorts and a pink tank top.

Moku has a mole on her upper left cheek and another one on her lower right cheek. She has the word “Sassy” tattooed on the inside of one of her ankles in pink lettering and has two vertical scars on one of her outer arms.

She suffers from a medical condition that requires medication.

She was last seen operating a blue 1995 Chevrolet Corsica four-door sedan bearing license plate HTN-328. The car was recovered 17 days later at the bottom of a cliff in Hakalau.

In January 2009, there was a possible sighting of Moku at a convenience store in Hawaiian Beaches. The woman matching her description left the store in a green Saturn.

Police ask that anyone with information on her whereabouts call Lieutenant Mitchell Kanehailua of the Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2252.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call crime stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.

Ahh Shucks… Blogs Called Off at Hawaii Corporation Counsel Conference… Staff Still Paid to Go on Our Tax Dollars… Golf at 12

I just received the following email from Hawaii County Corporation Counsel Lincoln Ashida regarding the conference at the Waikoloa in August, after asking details about the Blogging section of the conference.

Mr. Tucker,

The session on blogs did not make it to our final agenda.  Each year we have to pare our agenda down given the limited time slots at our conference, even if we run concurrent seminars.

This is the seventh year we are hosting this conference; we patterned instruction after the National College of District Attorneys (I was a member during my service as a prosecutor); each year our outstanding faculty donate their services pro bono in order to keep costs down.  We also do not burden our County general fund by any additional appropriations or requests for money; the conference for our staff is funded through a revolving account we established a few years ago. We also rely heavily on significant personal monetary contributions from the appointed staff in our office.

This conference has become the premier training in the State of Hawai‘i for government attorneys and administrative staff, and I thank you for writing about it on your website.

So just curious what a round of golf on a Friday afternoon has to do with our tax dollars? Will this be on State Time?

What Budget Cuts? Hawaii County Corporation Counsel Hosting Conference at the Hilton Waikoloa… BLOGS TO BE FEATURED

I find it very strange that in this day and age when were looking to make budget cuts all over the place, our own Hawaii County Corporation Counsel is hosting a Conference at the very nice Hilton Waikoloa Village.

…This year, we will feature an excellent variety of topics that will benefit all attendees, irrespective of their position in county or city government…

…The Hilton has offered us a very generous room rate of $139 per night. This rate will also be good three days before and after our conference, so please plan on taking advantage of our beautiful South Kohala Coast….

…”Early bird” conference registration is $295 per person, payable by June 30, 2009. Registration from July 1 is $325 per attendee…

But the thing that really catches my attention is the following:

“Integration of Island Culture and Tourism—a challenge for our counties to maintain a healthy economy”
“Ethics for government attorneys—what our clients demand and expect”*
*We are in the process of securing HSBA certification for the session to qualify for mandatory CLE credit.
“ADA Compliance and Reasonable Accommodation”
“Attorney Fees and Costs – What you need to know to protect government funds”
“Employee Discipline”
“Legislative Summary for 2009”*
*This will also include a roundtable discussion of proposed legislative initiatives for the 2010 session.
“Workforce Housing – Build it so they will come”
Counseling and Drafting Roundtable*
*Department representatives are encouraged to join their county attorneys and attend this popular open discussion on current issues facing the counties.
“Blogs—Information in the new age of media”
“Hawai‘i’s Ceded Lands case”
“Retention and destruction of email—UIPA requirements”
“Economic Development—opportunities for the counties”
OIP Update

Hey Linc… How about a personal invitation?

Who, What, and Where

I’ve added a live traffic feed widget at the bottom right of my blog.

It’s interesting to see where in the world readers are from and what they are reading in a real time perspective.

I’m not sure how long I’ll have this widget up though. To me it feels a bit weird to have this right on the site.
