*Update* Big Island Companies that Use Social Media Effectively

Social media and using the internet to promote your company is becoming bigger and bigger these days.

The Big Island has always been behind the times with things. I have to wonder if it’s because of the Time Zone difference at times… LOL. This was going to be a top 10 list, but I had some troubles finding 10 companies.

With new tools coming out like Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites, many Big Island companies are starting to turn to them

Here is my list of the Big Island Companies that are using social media to reach a broader base of clients then just the Big Island.

I’m not going to list these in any particular order.

1. KWXX – Radio Station. @DCB97 Darrin Carlson and @katkwxx use twitter to effectively tell residents through out the world what is happening in not only their personal lives, but what is going on at the station and around the community. A typical tweet from KWXX:

2. Big Island Pizza many great tweets about not only their pizza parlor, but you can read things like this:

Home-cured sausauges and deli meats! You can get these @ B.I.P. in whatever quantity you’d like, take them home and make meals w on ur own!

3. Big Island Toyota Hawaii – We all know the economy is tanking. GM Chevrolet Dealership just went up and bellied up the other day on the Island. Big Island Toyota seems to be doing fairly well during this recession. Using Twitter to promote cars and services you can often find messages like this:

4. AnelaJade – Using twitter as wells as Ebay to promote products you can see much of her stuff directly online w/out even having to waste gas and go to the store.

5. Island Trust Realty Company – While some Realty companies will use Twitter to strictly sell and push real estate, Island Trust has effectively used twitter to build a network of realtors and general friends across the world that they can share ideas about things that “Realtors” talk about.

A typical tweet from Island Trust will look like this:

6. Hamakua Springs Country Farms – Richard Ha’s blog that he writes, Ha! Ha! Ha!, with the help of Leslie Lang is an excellent source of information about farming, the Big Island, Technology and life in general. Richard has a Twitter account but is not actively using it. He’s a busy guy so I’ll let him off the hook.

7. The University of Hawaii at Hilo – I would hope that our local college would be even more active in social media. I guess at this point I’ll be happy that they have a community calendar that they keep updated fairly well. Speaking of which, I just noticed they have an RSS Feed to this so I’ll be adding it to my blog.

8. Big Island on the Cheap – I missed this one earlier, as I didn’t really consider it a business as much as just a cool website that I’m addicted too. A website/blog set-up to give Big Island residents options to do things on a limited budget. This site is run by Leslie Lang and Kris Bordessa, both of whom are big on twitter.

I’m sure I missed a few, but my mind is drawing blanks now. Of course a quick google search of “Big Island Hawaii” brought up the following list that you can see here. Unfortunately, not to many Big Island Businesses actually show up on that first site.

Slowly but surely we can start bringing tourist to the islands by getting many of our local businesses more active in Social Media. There is a whole new revolution coming.

I like what Christine Lu says in her post “At the Intersection of China and Hawaii” about social media:

“…It’s a two way dialog that freaks people out. Especially those who are used to crafting and controlling a message. If you can get through the tunnel, the light on the other side has proven that it creates new opportunity by putting you ahead of the curve.

As a result of the growing connection among bloggers in Hawaii with those in the mainland (USA in this case), this upcoming So Much More Hawaii tour is meant as a proof of concept that through social media, first hand insight of Hawaii can create content and outreach that influences those to understand Hawaii better and want to visit the islands…”
