TSUNAMI Advisory… or NOT?

Our civil defense message currently says there is not a Tsunami Watch:

This is a Civil Defense Message.

This is an earthquake informational bulletin for Thursday morning, March 19, at 9:30.

An earthquake of 7.7 magnitude occurred in the Tonga Islands Region at 8:18 a.m. Hawai’i time this morning. There is no tsunami watch or warning for Hawai’i at this time. No destructive tsunami threat is expected for Hawai’i at this time.

Some coastal areas in Hawaii could experience small non-destructive sea level changes and strong or unusual currents lasting up to several hours. The estimated time such effects might begin is 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009.

I repeat no destructive tsunami is expected for Hawai’i.

Thank you for listening and have a safe day.

But then when you go to the Actual Advisory… there is one currently under way:

AT 0933 AM HST.

Of course… I heard all this through Twitter before either site.

  1. This emerging island is what caused Krakatoa resulting in a 125′ tsunami! We aint seen nothing yet.

And there was an eruption on the only island between todays event and Hawaii, it was 5.0.

  2. It’s a good thing I read your blog Damon. Since I did not have on the radio or TV, I was just quietly reading in peace. I always appreciate being at the 800′ level.

    Love, Mom

  3. Chief of Fire” reported TSUNAMI WATCH

…Tiffany: “So did they say tsunami watch?”

Lifeguard source: “10 4. From chief of fire”

  4. “There is no tsunami watch or warning for Hawai’i at this time. No destructive tsunami threat is expected for Hawai’i at this time.”

This is correct. A tsunami watch, warning and threat was never issued for Hawaii by anyone official. A tsunami advisory was issued for Hawaii by PTWC earlier but was cancelled. PTWC is still advising residents to aware of unusual coastal surges and currents which is what Hawaii County CD is saying.

So what’s the beef with CD?

  5. What’s a Tsunami Advisory? I understand the difference between a Watch and Warning but does an Advisory mean: Maybe we should watch out? Someone’s watching and will warn us if necessary?

Messages were a little confusing this morning but we’ll be okay. I’m holding good thoughts for the people of Tonga.
