The Reason Why Tourists are Now Scared to Come to Hawaii

Lind Releases Old Puna Photos

In case you didn’t click on Ian Lind’s Blog today, I thought I would steer Big Island readers to his pictures of Puna from the 1950’s and 60’s.

Ian is lucky that his family has preserved all these pictures over the years.  The public is even luckier that Ian is willing to share them with us.

I like this picture, because it shows a road that I’ve never heard of, and I dig the license plate:

You can see more pictures like this here.

If you have time on your hand and really want to take a good look at Hawaii back in the days, Ian has a great collection located in his “Old Kine” archive.

Thanks Ian for sharing these with us!

Finally Local Coverage on the Flex Fuel Story

I blogged about the Flex Fuel problem in Hawaii a couple of days ago.

The Honolulu Advertiser has finally picked up the story on their “Breaking News” about an hour ago. ;)

Something I didn’t catch before:

… “If an alternative-fuel vehicle is available, we are mandated to buy it. We have no choice,” said Steve Mortimer, a manager in Hawai’i who helps set Navy policy on vehicles and equipment. “The (auto) manufacturers don’t have to supply the fuel. In Hawai’i, we just have unleaded and diesel and a little bit of propane…

Talk about waste.  It doesn’t take that much pre-planning to figure out something like this in advance.

Video Footage of the NASA Screw up: Losing Tools in Space

International Space Station astronaut Heidimarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, was attempting to do some work on the Space Station.  She was going along and then realized that her NASA-issued grease gun exploded in her tool bag.

She tried to fix the problem, but she couldn’t, and $100,000 + worth of tools are now floating in space somewhere because of her screw up.

Make a Difference in the Future of Puna

Make a difference in the future of Puna…

If you don’t, who will?

The County of Hawaii Planning Department has been accepting applications for the Puna Community Development Plan Action Committee since October 24, 2008. December 5th, the deadline to submit an application is rapidly approaching. We need to seat nine members and surprisingly, only three applications have been received so far. If you are interested in making a difference in the future of Puna, download an application and additional information at or pick up applications at the County of Hawaii Planning Department, 101 Pauahi Street, Suite 3, Hilo.

Coming Soon to Pahoa: Wai Ola Kangen Water Outlet

On Oahu they have a “Water Bar” that serves Mahalo Water for really outrageous prices.   I’m talking like $14.00 bucks for a simple glass of this Mahalo Water.  Here is a picture of the front of the Water Bar in Waikiki:

I just noticed on my walk earlier today, that next to the Pahoa Village Cafe that is returning, there is going to be a “Water Bar” or outlet type store of some sort.

I could only see the sign on the window and I could not see in, so I don’t know much about this store going in:

Coming Soon to Pahoa Mainstreet

A quick Google search on Kangen waters brings me to their homepage here.

I have always been one to kind of doubt the health benefits of Bottled Water compared to tap water.

Heck, we didn’t even have bottled water more then 20 years ago!

Paying ridiculous prices for a natural resource such as water just seems ridiculous to me.

“Anyone feel like contributing to fund the bridge I’m building from the mainland to here?” ;)

Someone once said there’s a sucker born every minute.

2009 Beauty Queens Announced

I posted a video earlier of the 2009 Miss Hawaii and Miss Teen Hawaii contestants here.

The Honolulu Advertiser announced the winners this morning.

The Miss Hawai’i Teen USA crown went to Ashley Moser, 17, of Hawaii Kai, a senior at Punahou…

“That Was a Good Show Dad!”

I’d like to thank Leslie Wilcox for turning my son onto a show called “WordWorld” that airs on PBS Hawaii.

Although it’s on at 5:30 in the morning here in Hawaii, after reading Leslies Blog I decided to DVR it to see if my son would like it.

He’s watching it now as I post this…

His exact words… “That was a good show dad!”

If you have children that are pre-school age and/or learning how to spell basic words, this is a great show.

Very rarely will you ever hear me promoting a TV show for kids.
