Cruise Ship Returns to Hilo with Two Sick Passengers

I don’t know what caused the people to get sick… I only read this on this ladies blog.

The Celebrity Mercury returned to Hilo, Hawaii, with two sick passengers a few days ago, delaying its return to San Diego and the start of the next cruise. The cruise that was supposed to start today won’t begin until tomorrow…

Dr. James Weatherford on the Internet Age and Politics

The following statement by Dr. James Weatherford, is something I think many people should think about:

…I do know that the internet as communications during a campaign is forever changed — a great improvement in the ability to communicate among and between people. Also, for better or worse, there has been demonstrated the ability to disseminate information in such volumes, so wide and far, and so rapidly as to diminish the standard for truthfulness. The downside of this new age of undifferentiated information needs to be overcome by basic human dignity on the part of participants. For example, by using real names, real data, and real references.” Dr. James Weatherford

This statement is an interesting statement.  Ever since we have had elections, there has been one way or another to disseminate information and support ones favorite candidate… Mail, TV, Radio, Door-to-Door, Sign Waving, etc.

I’ve always believed in the freedom of speech.  I don’t think someones personal thoughts whether they are “true” or not should make others feel so uncomfortable.

No one requires anybody to read someones blog, the newspaper, or even listen to the radio or television.

What is true to one person, may be completely false to another person.  There are no truths.  They are just inner belief systems.

I believe that Pilago would have made a better candidate… there for is the “Truth” that he would be the best mayor for the Big Island?  Well, in my eyes it is… But obviously to many people they thought differently.

I don’t visit certain blogs or websites because I know the content on that site is going to be against anything that I believe in.

The internet should not be “Blamed” for the way people respond/react/write/etc. to their political opponents.

Its only one small tool that has rapidly advanced.

So I ask Dr. Weatherford this… What is the “Standard of Truthfulness?”

Buddha might say:

Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.

Hawaii Signs Deal with Craigslist to Curb Prostitution in the Islands

Hawaii is one of the states that has signed the following agreement with craigslist.

…As part of Craigslist’s agreement with attorneys general around the country, anyone who posts an “erotic services” ad will be required to provide a working phone number and pay a fee with a valid credit card. The Web site will provide that information to law enforcement if subpoenaed…

A quick look at today’s listing in Craigslist “Erotic Services” section… I see many prostitutes that would probably not be able to sell their services under this new agreement.

Today’s Kook: Man Buys 10,000 Prints of Yesterday’s Bellingham Herald

I lived a good deal of my life in Bellngham, Washington and I just read that some guy from Birch Bay, Washington purchased 10,000 copies of yesterday’s Bellingham Herald just because Obama won the presidency and was on the cover of the paper.

He spent more then $5000 for these copies!

…On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Baldwin purchased 10,000 copies of The Bellingham Herald’s election wrap-up edition that has Obama smiling and waving on the front with “Obama wins” in bold letters across the top…

…The 67-year-old said he has a friend in California who sells copies of newspapers that are decades old at trade shows and makes a profit. He thinks he may be able to do the same with the Obama papers…

Maui Brewing Company Announces Eco-Friendly Plastic Carriers

Many people know about the plastic damage that is caused by 6-pack plastic can holders:

The Maui Brewing Company (MBC) has introduced a new plastic carrier that is supposedly more eco-friendly:

Maui Brewing Co. (MBC) is proud to announce that they are using new and unique can top rings by PakTech. These make the perfect eco-friendly can carrier. MBC is the first brewery to utilize PakTech’s technology for their canned microbrews.

PakTech is located in Eugene, OR and designs and manufactures packaging handles that provide a simple, low-waste alternative for bulk packaging. Their handles are injection molded using HDPE plastic which is universally recyclable. These new handles protect the can tops, offer integrated handles and create space for UPC labeling…

They still look like they could kill a few animals and I’m not sure if the picture above is the same they will be using for their beer.  This is just an example of a plastic holder designed by Paktech.

Here is a picture of one of their cans:

Hawaiian Woodrose as a Hallucinogen?

My mom uses the Hawaiian Woodrose plant as a decorative ornament on some of her coconut palm baskets she makes.  I just read this morning that the Woodrose has halucinogenic properties!

Disclosure: Do not try this yourself.

…Other substances on the internet include hallucinogens such as Hawaiian baby woodrose seeds and morning glory seeds.

One study has found that Hawaiian baby woodrose can set off acute psychotic episodes and experts have warned that morning glory can induce miscarriages…
