Two Kona Men Killed in Motor Vehicle/Motorcycle Crash

Two Kona men were killed Friday (July 13) from injuries they sustained in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash at the intersection of Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 11) and Kalamalani Place in Captain Cook, South Kona.


Responding to a 9:13 p.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that a 40-year-old Kailua-Kona man was operating a 1994 Honda motorcycle and traveling south on Route 11 when he crossed the centerline and collided with a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck being operated by a 33-year-old Kealakekua man. The Chevrolet was also traveling south and making a left turn onto Kalamalani Place.

A third vehicle, a 1991 Toyota pickup truck that was parked on private property, also received minor damage.

The motorcycle operator was identified as Toby H. Ledward of a Kailua-Kona address.

The driver of the truck was identified as Glennard A. Sadumiano, of a Kealakekua address.

The motorcycle operator was not wearing a helmet and the driver of the truck was not wearing a seat belt.

Fire Rescue personnel took the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck to Kona Community Hospital, where he died at 9:38 p.m.

Ledward was later transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m.

Police believe that the motorcycle operator was speeding and also believe that alcohol was involved.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated negligent homicide and coroner’s inquest cases and have ordered autopsies to determine the exact cause of death.

These are the 17th and 18th traffic fatalities on the Big Island this year compared with 12 at this time last year.

Highway 130 Wreck Leads to Death of Motorcyclist

5/7/12 UPDATE:  The 51-year-old Puna who man died May 2 from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 130 and Leilani Avenue in Pāhoa has been identified as Rikko J. Von Gato of Pāhoa.

A 51-year-old Puna man died Wednesday (May 2) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Route 130 and Leilani Avenue in Pāhoa.


Responding to a 9:54 a.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that the man was operating a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling west on Leilani Avenue when he failed to stop at the stop sign, went through the intersection onto a private driveway and struck a gate.

The man was not wearing a helmet.

He was taken to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in this crash.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Because this death occurred on a private road, it is not counted toward the official traffic fatality count.

38-Year-Old Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash on Akoni Pule Highway

A 38-year-old Kapaʻau man died Saturday (March 3) from injuries he sustained in a single motorcycle crash on Akoni Pule Highway in the area of the 21-mile-marker in the North Kohala District.

The motorcycle operator was identified as Lance C.K. Pule, of a Kapaʻau address.

Responding to a 12:44 p.m. call, North Kohala patrol officers determined that Pule was operating a 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle and traveling south on Akoni Pule Highway when he overtook another vehicle in a no-passing zone, lost control and ran off the right side of the highway.

Pule was not wearing a helmet. He was taken by Fire Department helicopter to Kohala Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:31 p.m.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in this crash. Witnesses reported that Pule was operating the motorcycle at a high rate of speed.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the sixth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared to five at this time last year.
