Man Charged With Nine Offenses in Connection to Puna Shooting

One of two Puna men arrested in connection with shots being fired in a residential neighborhood has been charged with nine offenses.

Peter Lopes Jr., 45, of Hawaiian Beaches was charged at 3:15 p.m. Friday with first-degree reckless endangering, abuse of a family/household member, three counts of ownership prohibited, three counts of place to keep and leaving the scene of an accident. His bail was set at $123,000. He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday.

Officers conducted a search warrant on his home Thursday and recovered two firearms with ammunition. Because Lopes is a convicted felon, it is illegal for him to possess weapons or ammunition.

Police determined that Lopes assaulted a 42-year-old woman on Wednesday (August 21) during a domestic argument in Hawaiian Paradise Park. After leaving the house, he collided with another vehicle, left the scene of the accident and then went to a home in Hawaiian Beaches, where he discharged a firearm.

The other man arrested after the shots were fired, 63-year-old Peter Lopes Sr., was released pending further investigation.

Big Island Police Investigating Puna Murder

Hawaiʻi Island police are investigating a fatal stabbing in Puna that occurred Wednesday night (August 21).

At 10:44 p.m., police and Fire Department personnel responded to a reported stabbing at a residence on Kawakawa Street in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision.

Upon arrival, police found a 42-year-old man with stab wounds. Fire Department personnel took him to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

At the scene, police arrested 27-year-old Manaolanalani Benford of Pāhoa on suspicion of second-degree murder. She is being held at the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continue the investigation.

 

Father Found in Bushes – Son Arrested on Outstanding Warrants

Police have located a Puna man wanted for assaulting a police officer, domestic abuse, and terroristic threatening. Christopher Gonsalves, Male 48, of Hawaiian Beaches, was arrested on 08-11-13, at approximately 5:40 pm, off of Ono Street, Hawaiian Beaches, hiding in a brush area in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision.

He is being transported to the Hilo Police Station Cellblock where he will remain pending further investigation. Also arrested a few minutes earlier on Ono Street, Hawaiian Beaches, was his son Christopher Gonsalves, Male 27, for two outstanding warrants and for a burglary that occurred in an apartment complex in Hilo. Gonsalves, Male 27, is also being transported to the Hilo Cellblock where we will remain pending further investigation.

Christopher Gonsalves, Male 48 years-old, of Hawaiian Beaches, is wanted for domestic abuse, terroristic threatening, and Assaulting a Police Officer. The incident occurred after police received a call and responded to a reported dispute at a Hawaiian Beaches park,
After assaulting an officer, Gonsalves fled the area.

Gonsalves is described as being 5’8″, 190 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Gonsalves is considered dangerous, and anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact police.

 

Big Island Police Searching for 21-Year-Old Missing Puna Woman

8/7/13 UPDATE: Hawaiʻi Island police have located 21-year-old Chelsea Wondergem, who was reported missing.

She was found unharmed Tuesday night (August 6) in Hilo.

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a 21-year-old Puna woman who was reported missing.

Chelsea Wondergem is described as Caucasian, about 5-foot-2, about 110 pounds with short blond hair and brown eyes. She was last seen May 27 in Hawaiian Beaches.

Police ask that anyone with information on her whereabouts call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Picture Released of 72-Year-Old Puna Man – More on Sunday’s Shooting

Big Island police have charged a 72-year-old Puna man in connection with a shooting Sunday evening (May 13) at a home in Panaʻewa.

Joseph Amormino of Hawaiian Beaches was charged at 3:23 p.m. Tuesday (May 15) with first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, burglary, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, place to keep ammunition, and two counts of place to keep firearms.

He was also charged with three counts of terroristic threatening for an unrelated incident that occurred about twenty minutes before the shooting. In that case, Amormino allegedly waved a handgun at a 52-year-old Mountain View woman, a 48-year-old Mountain View man and a 14-year-old Mountain View girl after reportedly tailgating their vehicle on Highway 130 near the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision.

Amormino’s bail was set at $656,000. He remains at the Hilo police cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday (May 16).
