Pahoa Citizens Community Meeting – “We Take Back Our Town”

A lot has been said on social media about the fire that took Luquins Restaurant and the historic Akebono Theater in Pahoa last week and many folks are quite fed up with what has happened in Pahoa over the last few years with the increase in the homeless folks that have been attracted to the area.
A citizens community meeting has been scheduled for Monday, January 23rd at the Pahoa Community Center beginning at 5:30 pm.

Invited to attend are staff members from the Hawaii County Prosecuting Attorneys Office, Hawaii County Police Department, Hawaii County Council Representatives as well as concerned citizens in general.

Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset’s 2016 Awards Banquet

About 100 folks filled the Akebono Theater in Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii last night as the Rotary Club of Pahoa Sunset had its 2016 Awards Banquet.

This year’s honorees for their outstanding service to the community were Mark Hinshaw for the Individual Award and the Corporate Award Recipient went to Bay Clinic Pahoa and the CEO Harold Wallace.

Elected dignitaries in attendance were State Senator Joy SanBuenaventura, Councilman Greggor Ilagan and Councilman Danny Paleka.  Also in attendance were County Council Candidates Madie Greene and Eileen O’hara.

Folks were able to bid on items donated by various community members and businesses.

A silent auction was held with items donated from Pahoa Ace Hardware, Photographer Alan Lakritz, Aloha All Natural Cleaning Service, Bank of Hawaii, Photographer Charlene Meyers, Christian Robinson’s Bamboo Zoo, Craig Watkins, Deborah Nichols, Geo Pacific LLC, Glen & Fran Calvert, Hilo Coffee Mill, Holly & Bob Johnson, Island Naturals, J Attig Anthuriums, Jungle Love, Kalani Retreat Center, Kua O Ka La Charter School, Lex Brodies and Pahoa Auto Parts.

Luquin’s Restaurant set up a taco bar for attendees and “The Gone Country Band” provided entertainment throughout the evening and the theme for the evening was “Cinco De Mayo x 2” (May 10th).

The Hawaii International Boxing Club presents a night of amateur boxing at the legendary Akebono Theater in Pahoa this Saturday night.  Doors open at 5:30 and the first fight is at 6:00.

Mahalo to The Pride of Puna for Raising 403 Pounds of Food for the Fight for Hunger

On Friday evening the Pride of Puna Kickboxing event took place at the Akebono Theater.   The cost of admission was $15.00 or $10.00 with a can of food.

Needless to say, a lot of folks saved money as 403 pounds of food was raised for the “Fight for Hunger”.

Pride of Puna – Pictures, Videos and Results

Last night at the Akebono Theater in Pahoa on the Big Island of Hawaii, the first ever Pride of Puna “Fight for Hunger” all ages kick boxing event took place to a sold out crowd.

The event began with some youth fights that were well appreciated by everyone in the crowd.

Here are the results from the youth fights:

  • 65 lbs – Ricky Mamone defeated Derek Romero
  • 70 lbs – Elija Apao defeated David Martinez Jr.
  • 95 lbs – Kaleo Apao defeated Damien Romero
  • 115 lbs- Trent Saragosa and Micah Castro had a DRAW
  • 125 lbs – Avery Sanchis defeated Ethan Ramos

Then the Open fights began with a women’s fight featuring Riechelle Silva vs. Kehaulani Rodrigues.

The fight was an exciting fight that saw Silva dominating Rodrigues for the majority of the fight and winning in the end.

The next fight saw Patrick Torres defeat Josh Sosa and then Mathew Majamay took on Kevin Silva:

In the end the judges declared Majamay the victory.

In the final Open fight, Conrodo Martin Defeated Keola Arakaki.  The night then moved to the Semi-Main Event which featured Petey Vital “3” defeating Donald Gonzales.

Petey Vital “3” was victorious in his Semi Main Event match and said later on at the Pahoa Village Club that he was ready to take on the UFC!

The Main Event saw Riquo Abadilla defeating Justin Yamauchi.

It was a great event that was put on and lots of food was raised. *UPDATE* 403 pounds of food were raised!

Tonight was the Akebono Theater Halloween party for kids in Pahoa Village.  Over 100 parents and kids enjoyed the festivities.

My wife made my sons costume and he took home first place for “Best Home Made Original Costume”.

Bat Boy the Musical Coming to Pahoa!

The Hilo Community Players presents: Bat Boy the Musical

THE STORY: Based on a story in The Weekly World News, “BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL” is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. For lack of a better solution, the local sheriff brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker, where he is eventually accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a “normal” boy by the veterinarian’s wife, Meredith, and teenage daughter, Shelley. Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls, they turn on him, prodded by the machinations of Dr. Parker, who secretly despises Bat Boy. Shelley and Bat Boy, who have fallen in love, run away together from the ignorant townfolk and have a blissful coupling in the woods, but their happiness is shattered when Meredith arrives and reveals a secret. Soon the entire town arrives and hears the shocking story of Bat Boy’s unholy origin.
