This is a Hurricane Madeline update for Tuesday, August 30th at 4 PM.
The Hurricane Warning that is now in effect for Hawaii County means hurricane conditions are expected within the next 36 hours.
At 2 PM today the National Weather Service reported that Hurricane Madeline was located about 350 miles east of Hilo moving west at 10 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour with higher gusts.
The National Weather Service forecasts the center of Madeline to pass very close to the south of South Point on the Big Island sometime tomorrow.
High surf generated by Madeline is expected along east facing shores of the Big Island starting tonight. Heavy rains associated with Madeline may reach Hawaii County on Wednesday with greatest amounts over windward areas. This rainfall may lead to dangerous flash floods and mudslides. Tropical-storm-force winds and possible hurricane-force winds are expected over Hawaii County sometime tomorrow.

To keep everyone safe as Hurricane Madeline approaches, Hawaii Island DOE public schools will be closed tomorrow and Thursday. In addition the following charter schools closures will be in effect starting tomorrow:
- Ka’u Learning Academy in Na’alehu
- Kua o ka Lā New Century Public Charter School
- Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science Public Charter School in Pahoa will be closed tomorrow.
- Connections Public Charter School and Ka ‘Umeke Ka’eo Charter School in Hilo will be closed tomorrow and Thursday.
If possible and safe, shelter in place or with family and friends. Otherwise, the following emergency shelters will open today at 5:00 PM: Waiakea High, Hilo High, Laupahoehoe High, Kalanianaole Elementary, Honokaa High and Intermediate, Waimea Intermediate, Waikoloa Elementary, Kohala High and Elementary, Kealakehe High, Konawaena High, Ka’u High, Mountain View Elementary, Keaau High and Pahoa High. Shelters able to accommodate pets are listed at hawaiicounty.gov. Bring your own bedding, food, water, medicines and any personal items you may need.
All County of Hawaii facilities, offices and services will be closed tomorrow including Hele-On Bus service, solid waste transfer stations and landfills. All State and County park facilities including lava viewing, and some camping and remote areas of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park will also be closed tomorrow.
