All Big Island Public Schools Closed Wednesday and Thursday for Hurricane Madeline

With Hurricane Madeline expected to maintain its strength as it approaches the state, the Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) will close public schools on Hawaii Island on Wednesday, Aug. 31 and Thursday, Sept. 1. Closures are being made in anticipation of severe weather. All other schools in other counties will remain open until further notice.

Additionally, all Hawaii Island inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities are canceled on Wednesday and Thursday.

A list of public charter school closures is posted here, http://www.chartercommission.hawaii.gov/.

Many HIDOE schools serve as emergency shelters; however, County Civil Defense agencies have determined which schools are activated shelters.

Hawaii County designated the following schools as activated shelters starting today at 5 p.m.:

  • Hilo High
  • Honokaa High
  • Kalanianaole Elementary and Intermediate
  • Kau High
  • Keaau High
  • Kealakehe High
  • Kohala High
  • Konawaena High
  • Laupahoehoe Public Charter School
  • Mountain View Elementary
  • Pahoa High
  • Waiakea High
  • Waikoloa Elementary
  • Waimea Intermediate

Please check with State, www.scd.hawaii.gov/index.htm, or Hawaii County Civil Defense, http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/civil-defense/, for more information on emergency shelters. For updated information, follow HIDOE on Twitter at @HIDOE808
