Japanese Visitor Drowns in Kona Waters

A Japanese visitor apparently drowned Monday (July 30) in Kailua-Kona.

At 11 a.m. Monday, Kona patrol officers responded to a report of a possible drowning in waters fronting a resort at 75-5852 Aliʻi Drive in Kailua-Kona.

Arriving officers learned that resort personnel and bystanders had pulled an unconscious male snorkeler from the water and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Officers assisted with CPR until Fire Department personnel arrived.

The 60-year-old victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest. They have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
