3rd Annual Rain Forest Run

It’s time to lace up, stretch out and get ready to Run Rain Forest, Run! Volcano Art Center (VAC) presents the 3rd annual Rain Forest Runs on Saturday, August 18, 2012 under the leadership of Sharron Faff, race director for the Kona Marathon.

“Rain Forest Runs is a fun-filled family event that brings in needed awareness about the Hawaiian rainforest and attracts viable business to the greater Volcano community,” stated Faff.

Once again featuring a Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races, Rain Forest Runs boasts cool temperatures and cooler views as runners and walkers traverse through the Niaulani Rain Forest in Volcano Village on Hawaii’s Big Island. This annual event is co-sponsored by The Cooper Center, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the County of Hawaii and takes place at 4,000 feet above sea level just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to one of the most active and visited volcanoes in the world, Kilauea.

The 5K and 10K participants weave through the lush native rain forest on the mostly flat, tranquil roads of Volcano Village while the Half Marathon course continues into the hills of the surrounding ranch lands, treating racers to breathtaking panoramic views of the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes.

This year, an opening ceremony is planned for 6:30am to kick off the day’s festivities. The Half Marathon start time is scheduled for 7:00am, the 10K starts at 7:30am and the 5K starts at 7:45am. Race day registration for the 5K and 10K only begins at 6:00am; there is no race day registration for the Half Marathon. The ever-popular Keiki Runs begin at 10:00am.
