Puna’s Mālamalama Waldorf School (MWS), Hawai‘i County’s only independent school offering the internationally recognized Waldorf curriculum, has just received a generous grant from Envision Media to support the school’s arts education program.

The $708.00 grant will be used to bring in noted Big Island artist, Patricia Leo to work with the students.

Leo’s paintings have been described as innovative, original and enchanting.  “It’s really a great opportunity for the students to explore the reaches of their imaginations with such a great artist.  We’re really grateful to Envision Media,” said board Vice President, Kim Arakawa.  Arakawa a former educator goes on to say, “Research continually shows that arts education is linked to almost everything that we say we want for our children, academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity.”

For over 30 years MWS has been incorporating the arts and hands-on learning activities in conjunction with academics while focusing on educating the whole child, head, heart, and hands.  According to Administrative Chair, Kehaulani Costa, “A large part of our operating budget goes to tuition assistance, ensuring that as many families as possible have access to the school.  Support from organizations like Envision Media is vital to our ability to continually provide enriching programs to our students.”

According to Envision Media Art Director, Hugh Broughton, “Schools have been losing more and more funding for art curricula.  We believe that art is essential for encouraging creativity and developing focus in our youth, and in many ways making the world a more beautiful place to live.”
