Upward Bound Accepting Applications From Big Island Students

Upward Bound is currently accepting applications from low-income and potential first-generation college bound 9th and 10th grade students attending Waiakea, Hilo Ka’u, Kea’au and Pahoa High Schools. Students must be motivated to prepare for, and pursue a four-year degree following high school graduation.

UH Hilo has sponsored Upward Bound since 1979. Upward Bound is a college preparatory program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to serve 180 students. Students must be members of low-income families and/or members of families where neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. The program provides fundamental academic, social and motivational support for participants, and assists the participant and family to develop a College Success Plan. Students are expected to enter college the fall semester immediately following high school graduation.

Services provided include tutoring; secondary and postsecondary academic advising; instruction in core subjects (mathematics, laboratory sciences, language arts, literature and foreign languages); career exploration; mentoring; work-study opportunities; and services designed to improve the financial and economic literary of participants and parents. Programming and activities are designed to help students from groups traditionally under-represented in postsecondary education.

The mission of Upward Bound is to generate in program participants the skills and motivation necessary to successfully complete a program of secondary education, enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education, earning a bachelor’s degree, and enter a career requiring at minimum a bachelor’s degree.

Horizon Ship Reliance Rescues Family Adrift at Sea Enroute to Hilo

Horizon Lines, Inc. today announced that one of its vessels enroute to Hawaii from the U.S. West Coast rescued three sailboat passengers, including a nine-year-old boy, adrift in stormy seas in the predawn hours of February 8, 2012.

Captain James Kelleher and the crew of the 893-ft. Horizon Reliance containership were directed by the U.S. Coast Guard to alter course at full speed to assist the 33-ft. sailboat and its crew of three. The sailboat, said to be traveling from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to Hilo, Hawaii, was reported to be adrift without power, with all sails destroyed, approximately 411 nautical miles east of Honolulu. Weather conditions were poor, with southwesterly winds gusting to 40 knots and sea swells in the 20-ft. range. Horizon Lines is a member of AMVER, a voluntary program sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard for mutual vessel assistance and rescue.

The rescue took place at approximately 2 a.m. local time and all three passengers are now aboard the Horizon Reliance and reported to be in good health and spirits. The Horizon Reliance is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu at 4 a.m. local time on February 9, 2012. At that time, the rescued passengers, three Canadian males ages 33, 29, and nine, will be medically evaluated and debriefed by Coast Guard and other officials.

“We are thankful the Horizon Reliance was in the right place at the right time to come to the aid of these individuals,” said William A. Hamlin, Horizon Lines Senior Vice President of Operations. “We commend Captain Kelleher and his crew for their skilled seamanship in accomplishing a successful rescue despite very adverse weather conditions.”

FCC Renews Licenses For Big Island and Maui Radio Stations Despite Objections of Employee Who Complained of Radiation

The FCC has renewed Visionary Related Entertainment’s licenses for World Music KNUQ (Q103.7) Paaulio, HI and Rock KAOI-F Wailuku, Maui, HI for a limited 12-month period and has conditioned the renewal on VISIONARY implementing an RF radiation training program.

The grant comes over the objections of the D.T. Fleming Arboretum and Martha Vockrodt-Moran, an employee of the Arboretum, who complained that the KAOI tower site could expose employees and guests of the arboretum to excessive radiation.  The complaints noted that the antenna was not fenced in and was low to the ground; excessive radiation was measured in the area.  KAOI moved to a new site 21 km away, but its KNUQ subsequently was found to be exceeding RF limits in public areas, for which the Commission proposed a fine.

In renewing the licenses, the Commission noted that Visionary had corrected the problems and is now in compliance, but that its “conduct has fallen far short of the standard of compliance with the Act and the Rules that would warrant routine license renewal” and therefore should be hit with a short-term renewal.

Wordless Wednesday – As Seen in Chinatown

Last Friday I went over to Oahu for a social media meeting with Oceanic Time Warner and after the meeting I took a cruise through Chinatown.

At the Mauna Kea Marketplace you can find all sorts of items that are popular in Chinese cooking.  I happen to like most Chinese food… but here is something that I won’t ever try!

Live Bullfrogs for Sale

I’ve heard the frog legs taste like chicken… but at $6.99 a pound for frogs… I’d prefer to just have chicken!

I wonder where they purchase them from?

I see bullfrogs all the time on the Big Island… Anyone interested in buying them if I were to start capturing them?  Better yet… you think coqui frogs are edible?
