Pahoa Teacher Named District Teacher of the Year by Governor Abercrombie

Governor Neil Abercrombie, Board of Education Chair Donald Horner, and Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi honored the  District Teachers of the Year and announced the 2012 State Teacher of the Year as  Chad Miller of Kailua High.

The State Teacher of the Year is selected from the current District Teachers of the Year:

• Kaeokulani Vasconcellos (Honolulu District, Roosevelt High),
• Meghan McCormick (Central Oahu District, Wheeler Middle),
• Luane Higuchi (Leeward Oahu District, Waianae Intermediate),
• Chad Miller (Windward Oahu District, Kailua High),
• Nancy Iaukea (Hawaii District, Pahoa High and Intermediate),
• Mitzi Hasegawa (Maui District, Hana High and Elementary), and
• SheriAnn Moises (Kauai District, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle),

The Polynesian Cultural Center, the State Teacher of the Year program’s corporate sponsor for over 25 years, awarded $500 to each District Teacher of the Year. In a colorful presentation featuring music and dance, PCC  presented an additional $1,000 to the State Teacher of the Year.

SMARTer Kids Foundation presented each District Teacher of the Year with gifts of instructional software, and other classroom technology to the State Teacher of the Year.

The Hawaii Automobile Dealers’ Association awarded the State Teacher of the Year with a free one-year lease on a new car.
