and Oahu’s Pacific Roller Derby all-stars, the Hulagans, in a derby double-header.
The event is scheduled for Sat., Aug. 13 at Hilo’s Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the first bout starts at 5 p.m. with the Hulagans vs. the Sockit Wenches, followed by Paradise Roller Girls’ newly-named all-stars, the Hawaiian Honey Badgers vs. the Sockit Wenches.
Tickets are available now at www.paradiserollergirls.com or from your favorite derby girl. Other outlets include CD Wizard, Mountain View Village Video, Akmal’s Indian Food, Kalapana Village Cafe, Jungle Love and at the door the day of the event. Pre-sale ticket price is $10, $15 at the door. Selling out is anticipated so get your tickets early! Children two and under are free. Please, no strollers, coolers or beverage containers; concessions will be available inside.
Aug. 13 will also debut PRG’s all-new Junior Roller Derby team, the Big Island Babes, with a scrimmage between the bouts. With 35 girls ranging from 8 to 17 years old, the Big Island Babes Junior Derby started June 6 of this year.
Double the bouts means double the half-time contests! The first bout half-time contest is Derby Girl Dress-Up where audience teams scramble to dress their friend in protective gear and accessories. Once dressed, the first “derby girl” to finish a lap around the track wins.
The second bout will feature Paradise Roller Girls’ favorite contest – the Superfan Costume Contest. Come dressed to impress in your best derby fan outfit! Our lovely half-time emcees OxyJen and Bam Boo Hoo will prowl the crowd looking for the best costumes to feature in the contest, so make sure to strut your stuff before the bout starts. Great prizes, including a family four-pack, eight-line zipline adventure from Honoli‘i Mountain Outpost.
PRG is donating $1 from every ticket sold for the Aug. 13 event to the Hilo Skate Plaza Coalition. Hilo Skate Plaza Coalition works directly with the non-profit organization Big Island Resource Conservation and Development to accept tax deductible donations. The Coalition is currently working towards their financial benchmark of $100,000 to secure a vacant lot within the Hilo Ho‘olulu Complex for construction of the Hilo Skate Plaza. Once constructed, the Hilo Skate Plaza will provide a safe environment for a variety of recreational activities.
Paradise Roller Girls is a women’s flat track roller derby league based out of Hilo, Hawaii. PRG membership is island-wide with teams in Kona and Hilo.
Sponsors of the Midsummer Night Scream include WillKill Termites & Pests, Aloha Coast Realty, KapohoKine Adventures, Kona Marine Supply, Law Offices of Steven Strauss, Sin City Skates, Coldwell Banker Day-Lum and Curly Pinky Designs.
