As part of “Aerospace in Hawaii Week,” October 4 through 10, Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor invites you to “the heart of space” to hear and meet NASA Astronaut John Bennett Herrington, Commander, USN, Ret. at Pacific Aviation Pearl Harbor, 7pm Monday, October 5.

When space shuttle Endeavour launched in the evening of Nov. 23, 2002, on flight STS-113, mission specialist John Bennett Herrington made history as the first Native American in space.

U.S. Navy Commander Herrington flew from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center with six other astronauts to the International Space Station. It was the 16th American assembly flight to the space station. To honor his Native American heritage, Herrington, a registered Chickasaw, carried a Chickasaw Nation flag on his eleven-day trip. The flag had been presented to him by Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby. Herrington’s maternal great-grandmother was of Chickasaw descent.

The event is free to Hawaii teachers and Museum members.

Reservations are required to drive on to Ford Island for the event. The shuttle will not be running after 5pm. Call the Museum at 808/441-1008 or email tourcoordinator@PacificAviationMuseum.org by October 1 to secure access.
