West Hawaii Today Files Another Sunshine Lawsuit Against County Council

Remember my blog in April about Stop the Tsunami?

Sunshine Tsunami

Well looks like the West Hawaii Today is trying to play the roll of breakwall.

The Kohala Blog is reporting that the West Hawaii Today has filed a second lawsuit against the Hawaii County Council Members for a seperate violation of the Sunshine laws.

Today 9/1/09 West Hawaii Today newspaper filed a motion with the Third Circuit Court to file a Second Amended Complaint in order to expose addition conduct in violation of the Sunshine Law…

I remember reading the Kohala Blog previously on this issue before today’s WHT lawsuit was filed:

SHAME on the County Council members who today voted in favor of Resolution 98-09. The purpose of that resolution was to support state legislation designed to gut the Fair Election Project that would afford public funding for elections on the Big Island between 2010 and 2014. Very disappointing vote by Yoshimoto, Ikeda, Enriques, Oishi, Greenwell, and Naeole…
…HB345 should be killed — regardless of what the vote was before the Hawaii County Council. Regardless of whatever justification was given by these folks, they were simply afraid of facing a more open election process in 2010…

Here is an interesting comment left on this this message board:

Re: 2009 House Bill 345 (Amends Public Election Funding for Hawaii County Council) [by billlela on April 8, 2009]

Hawaii Island Councilman J. Yoshimoto (East Hawaii) called a special council meeting for 4/13 for the purpose of voting to kill the pilot project for the Fair Elections.

This action alone speaks volumes about why we need this act in the first place and why many worked to get it.

Yes, this is probably as rotten as it appears. As a citizen of West Hawaii Island, we are quite used to special interest politics, none of which has ever favored the tax paying side of Hawaii Island.
