Correcting “Slow Eye” With My Son

For those of you who who have met my son or have followed my blog and seen pictures of my son, you may have noticed that his left eye tends to drift in some of his pictures.

Ever since he was born, he has had a “Slow Eye”.

He can see fine when he is paying attention but when he’s not really paying attention, one of his eyes kind of drifts off to the side.

It hasn’t affected him at all, and he is a better then average reader according to the national tests that Kamehameha Schools tested him on before they accepted him into their school.  He ended up being one of only 20 boys on the Island accepted into this prestigious school… AND HE TOOK THE TESTS WITHOUT GLASSES!

Well my son is finally old enough that we can actually do something about it now so that hopefully his vision will be fine in the long run.  The optometrist says that if he wears glasses his vision will probably be corrected as he get’s older.

My son is actually pretty stoked to get them.  We keep calling them his Super Glasses.  The first time he was wearing them and went outside he told me that he could see much farther!

I’m stoked that they can do this with young kids so that they don’t have to spend the rest of their lives wearing glasses.

We even got him a pair of special sports glasses for when he plays soccer and begins other sports.  You can’t see them in the picture, but they are custom fit and have a strap to keep them in place.  (Custom fit… LOL… I guess I didn’t have them on right when I took the picture… oh well)

The best thing about him getting glasses so young… is that as he’s entering Kamehameha… None of the other kids will even know that he didn’t wear glasses before… so it won’t be a big deal for him at all as he begins school there.

I remember the jokes that we kids used to call other kids with glasses when i was younger…

Kids are ruthless!

  1. None of my grown children personally had this issue as a child, but their stepsister did and glasses have corrected her sight quite well.
Congrats to you and your family for raising such a bright young man! He’s a cutie.

  2. He looks so cute… and SMART!
