Is Representative Jon Riki Karamatsu Healthy?

I don’t know if anyone has been following State House Representative Jon Riki Karamatsu’s blog of late, but twice in the last 45 days he has awoken at night with problems that are serious enough that he blogs about them… yet not serious enough to get professional help?

Is he trying to tell us something?

A Breath Away

On March 22, 2009, at 3:00 A.M. Sunday morning, I woke up having a difficult time breathing and felt nauseated.  I thought it was strange since I wasn’t sick.  I was thinking of calling my parents or 911.  Instead, I grabbed my two juzus and thought of my late grandparents.  My breathing was very thin with a slight weezing sound.  Then after about 10 minutes, I felt the air passage suddenly open up and everything became normal again as if nothing happened.  If it continued, I would have called for assistance.  I thought of death for a moment until I felt my breath again.  I wonder if it was stress or was it something else?

And then a few weeks later he blogs:

In my life, I have experienced a lot of challenges. I have my faults and have made my share of mistakes. Many people took advantage of me for their gain when I made my DUI mistake. There are things I wish I did differently in my personal life. I have seen a lot of anger and had numerous threats against me.

There is good media and bad media. The bad media has personalities that are rude, twist your words, and misstate the facts…

… Within elected politics, there is power-tripping, jealousy, and the dilemna on what one feels is the right thing to do versus what will keep one elected.

Among all this, I have lost some of my patience and compassion. I have to do my best to bring back balance to myself and not get upset from all the negativity…

I wasn’t really thinking to much about it, but then he blogs again:

This past Monday, April 6, 2009, I woke up at 2:45 A.M. with pain in my chest. It was tight, sore, and hot. It went away after about 30 minutes.

Even one of his readers makes the following comment:

I saw you the other day. You do not look well. I don’t think its just legislative exhaustion. You really look as though the vital force is being drained from you. Perhaps it is time to move on from the legislature to something else? I don’t think elective office is healthy for most people, but even a change to a different body may be a stop-gap measure for you. You are really such a nice guy — why destroy the rest of your life for politics?

I’m not sure if he responded personally to this reader but he hasn’t addressed the comment on his blog.

Is Representative Karamatsu healthy? Or does he just have a bad case of heartburn or something?

You may want to ask this politician why he supports the live dismemberment of animals and why he is the sole obstructionist to a shark fin bill currently making the rounds here.

    This is an environmental Democrat?

  2. Where there is smoke there is fire! Stress can cause symptoms like his, of course, but it also causes hypertension and a whole menu of other very bad symptoms. What I do not get is why he was going to call his parents “or” 911. How old is this guy?

Anyway, this is an instance of “too much information” on his part. Blogging is good, but personal health issues are not for everyone to read, especially if you are a newsmaker anyway. Geesh, you have to wonder about his choices when he publicly posts things like this and then complains that he is being talked about.

  3. Interesting Doug… I wonder who the other bloggers are that he is referring to in his post?

  4. Whaddya know, now Karamatsu says that he is healthy. As if healthy people wake up at night because they have nausea and can’t breath…

  5. I have no idea if he is healthy, but it’s not the kind of writing you’d expect to read coming from the chair of the judiciary committee!
