Hawaii Will Become Spaceport… Rocketplanes a Reality for Hawaii?

I blogged about the Rocketplanes in Hawaii a while back… looks like they might come into fruition after all.

Representative Gene Ward (R-Hawaii Kai-Kalama Valley) said today that Hawaii will never be the same again with the passage of House Bill 994.

The measure, “Relating to Space Tourism” sets in motion a licensing process for Hawaii to become a space port for weightless and supersonic flights. “Weightlessness flights will be a big boost to tourism and make us an even more attractive destination area,” Ward said.

Space tourism is a potential billion dollar global industry that could significantly increase state revenue sources, provide new aerospace jobs, and rejuvenate economic development in Hawaii.

“Not too far into the future there will be transpacific flights by rocket planes that can take off like a normal airplane in Honolulu, then reach a certain altitude, fire its rockets, and be in Japan in just 45 minutes,” Ward said.

HB 994 is expected pass easily in both House and Senate final votes next week. The 2009 Legislative Session has been extended by two additional days and ends May 8th. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3vU64RCghs&hl=en&fs=1]

  1. I agree with Su. There’re already facilities on the mainland for “space tourism” and I don’t believe that the industry is going to be so big that it’ll be economically viable here. Hundreds of thousands of bucks for a fifteen minute ride? Pretty small market. Supersonic rocket planes serving the Japan-Hawaii tourism route? The Concorde couldn’t survive flying between freakin’ New York City and Europe!

  2. I remember in 1964-65 there was going to be a space port at South Point. All the development of Ocean View was for support homes for the people who would work at the spaceport., three schools built, firestation, police stations, shopping centers… the whole calabash of what was to be done. It is now 54 years since we heard all that, that was supposed to be happening “In a few years”. How fast 1/2 centuries go by. I also heard that a private flight like that would cost about 1/2$Million to take the flights. I don’ know how many workers who have that kind of disposable income, except for some bankers and stockbrokers.
