1 in 32 Hawaii Residents in Jail and Racial Disparity in Hawaii’s Prisons

One in 32 Hawaii adults are either behind bars, on probation or parole, according to a new study released Monday by the Pew Center on the States.

  • 1 in 32 adults is under correctional control
  • Growth over time: in 1982, the figure was 1 in 90 adults
  • Percent behind bars: at year end 2007, 29 percent of the correctional population was in prison or jail (national rank: 34); the figure for 1982 was 20 percent (national rank: 44)
  • $228 million spent on corrections
  • Share of general fund: 4.3 percent in fiscal year 2008
  • Ratio of spending: For every dollar Hawaii spent on corrections in 2008, 4 cents went to probation and parole
