Hilo Gets New Record Rainfall

I just noticed the following:

RECORD EVENT REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI
445 PM HST FRI DEC 26 2008

...RECORD DAILY MAXIMUM RAINFALL SET AT HILO HI...

A RECORD RAINFALL OF 5.25 INCHES WAS SET AT HILO HI TODAY. THIS
BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF 3.56 SET IN 1981. THIS IS A PRELIMINARY
RECORD SINCE RAINFALL CONTINUES ON THE BIG ISLAND.

  1. It’s the record rainfall for 26th December, not the record for the amount of rain in one day (and it’s now over 9 inches). The record amount of rainfall in Hilo in one day is much more than this.

I don’t understand why the NWS make this so unclear. At least one local TV station has been saying it’s the record for any 24-period in Hilo and it isn’t, not by a long way.

  2. Is that record for rain in an hour??? We certainly have had way more than that in a DAY.

Damon – “Hilo Airport reported record high rainfall for Dec. 26, with 5.25 inches recorded by 5 p.m. – and rain still falling. The old record was 3.74 inches set in 1981.”
