Councilman Charles Djou on “Dumping” His Staff… “For Liability Reasons… I Have No Comment…”

I emailed Honolulu Councilman Charles Djou yesterday and asked him why he “Dumped” his staff the other day.  Mr. Djou knows I have my blog and I have emailed him over the last couple years about different issues that have come up.  I was surprised at his most recent reply to me regarding this issue as he gave a very cryptic response:

Aloha Damon.  For liability reasons, I will not discuss any internal  personnel actions.  I have no comment on any personal decisions my staff or I make on employment matters.  If you are asking in your capacity as a prospective employer, I would be happy to discuss this matter with you confidentially in person.  I am sorry I can not be more forthcoming and I hope you understand.

Aloha,
Charles K. Djou

I’m not sure where he got the “prospective employer” from. ;)

24/7 Has Pictures of Robert Wood Foundation Winner

I broke the news back in October that Deann Canuteson, of Kealakekua,  was a major award winner of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Hawaii24/7 has a much better article they just recently posted along with a great picture of her award and a little more information on “Full Life”.

“How much fuller can life be with $125,000?

That’s what Deann Canuteson is finding out. The co-founder and president of Full Life recently was named one of 10 extraordinary Americans, recognized for local innovation in improving health and health care by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation…”

Oops… PGV Drills Into Magma! The Untold Story

Hat tip to Andrew Cooper for posting about this incident that  happened in 2005 and is only now being reported:

Drillers looking for geothermal energy in Hawaii have inadvertently put a well right into a magma chamber

…This is not the first time drillers have encountered magma; the depth of the hit and the setting are, however, thought to be unique…

…”At no time were we in danger of losing control of the well.”

The breakthrough was made in 2005. Only now are researchers confident enough about their work to discuss the details publicly

Emmy Award Winner Faith Rivera Visits Pahoa High “At Risk” Kids

Emmy Award winner Faith Rivera recently visited Pahoa High School and spent some time with “At Risk” kids.

She writes about it in her most recent blog posting:

Wanted: Your Groovy Tracks to Empower “High-Risk” Teens to “High Hopes”

“Earlier this December, I had an amazing time at Pahoa High on the Big Island with “at-risk” teens. Many of them come from broken homes and live with challenges like substance abuse, domestic violence, or parents/family in jail, if not, incarceration themselves…”

HECO and Khosla Ventures Very Strange Duo or Is It?

Vinod Khosla

Vinod Khosla

The choice of Khosla Ventures is a bit curious to me.

VC Ratings blog provides a list of 26 renewable energy startups that Vinod Khosla’sKhosla Ventures’ has invested in. He is well known for his investments in biofuel related companies, but the list reveals a much broader scope. Many, if not most, of these companies have a long way to go before they pay off, and some will not make it, but it interesting to see what he is doing. Here are the categories he uses and the specific companies (except for 5 that he labeled as stealth) that he has invested in.

Animal Abuse or Dog Hunting Training: WARNING GRAPHIC Video

I just noticed this youtube video that was posted today.  It’s a pretty disturbing video.

The poster of the video jasminelai7 has posted other similar videos on their youtube site.

My intent is not to get this person in trouble… but only to bring out some of the realities of things that go on here in Hawaii.

I have members in my own family that go hunting with dogs, so I don’t want to sound like I’m some prude or something.  I know the realities of many things in life and I’m probably not as bothered by this clip as many others will be.

They posted the following quote with this video:

Telephone Disruption in County Planning Department

Hilo Planning Department office undergoing Renovation

The Hilo office of the Planning Department, located at Aupuni Center, is currently undergoing a renovation that will disrupt phone service until such time that a new digital phone system is installed some time in January 2009.

The Planning Department’s main phone line (961-8288) will remain operational, but the phone directory and extensions to individual employees may direct callers to the wrong person.

If callers experience difficulties in reaching a particular person, they are advised to leave a voice message so that someone can get back to them.

Just Butt Ugly or Bipalium Kewense

I went outside just a few moments ago and I saw this worm that I keep seeing around our house.  It’s got to be the ugliest damn worm I’ve ever seen.

worm1

It’s kind of tough to see in this picture, however, I wanted to show how long the worm was.  It was literally about 8 inches long.

I’ve seen them quite a bit on the Big Island.  I don’t recall seeing them ever on the mainland.

Here is a close up of the above picture:

wormclose

I googled “Flat Head Worm” and the first picture that showed up was a picture from a website that used to be on Hunter Bishop’s blogroll, “Hawaiian Highlands” and there at the very bottom of the page was an explanation of what the worm was:

This is a shovel-headed garden worm, Bipalium kewense

highlandworm

“…Shovel-headed garden worms are carnivorous and eat earthworms, insects, slugs and snails. Strangely they can reproduce two ways: 1) asexually through fission where the tail falls off and grows its own head, or 2) sexually with another shovel-headed worm. An even stranger fact is that these worms eat and poop out the same hole which is located in the mid-section of its underside; according to Tbear that makes them “potty mouths.” Supposedly these flat-head worms are harmless to humans, but they can decimate earthworm populations, and that’s not so good.” HawaiianHighlands

I Am The Way… The Way I Am

Well if I haven’t pissed everyone off over my blogs about the MacKenzie slayings, I’m sure to piss a few people off with this one.

I have never been real religious.  I don’t have anything against people who are religious.  I consider myself more “spiritual” then anything.

I attended a service this morning and they did the thing where they dunk the piece of bread in holy water and then you eat the bread.

Everyone was moving to the pastor to have it done… but then my wife grabbed me and told me that I’m not suppose to go up there because I’m not of that “Religion”.  Talk about feeling left out ;)

Sometimes I wonder if people really believe that I’m going to go to heaven or hell based upon things that I do?

If that’s the case, I’m going to Hell because there isn’t anything that could ever over come all the bad punk ass crap I did as a kid to ever get me into heaven.

Religion, Politics and Murders… two three things I should stay away from… because I know I’m just gonna piss people off.
