Benjamin Kauhi Hauanio… one of the last true Hawaiian Fishermen is in a better place now.
I just got back from the services at Dodo Mortuary.
He recently was featured in the documentary “Kau La`au & Ma`ama`a: Traditional Hawaiian Ulua Fishing.”
…The film is a half-hour documentary about the traditional ulua fishing practiced by Hawaiians from Kalapana village on the Big Island of Hawai‘i….

Awesome post!
That pole is actually part of the old-style Hang Bait method utilized to catch ulua in the early Hawaiian days. The Hauanio’s were one of the last practitioners of the that style of fishing. They were featured in the Hawaii Fishing News (Nov. 08). Uncle Ben’s legacy continues with his ‘ohana and recorded in the aforementioned video.
May he rest in peace and big mahalo to him for sharing his mana’o.
THAT is the biggest fishing pole I have ever seen!
How interesting Damon, and what a heritage for your son too! Thanks for sharing it with me.
